1x32GB memory is cheaper than 2x16GB, so why not always pick first?

Are there any reasons for picking the latter? It seems the 1st is not only cheaper, but also more flexible (you can add another 32 GB stick in later).

It may be ingrained in us older folks, but we always bought memory boards in pairs. (And the largest pair goes in slots zero and one.)

And the day the memory chip first went to market, the value of core memory companies went to nothing.
