Best VPS for Free GNU/Linux distributions!

Prove otherwise then, as results speak much louder than actions or words.

If such a claim was true, assuming you speak on behalf of society in the first place, you would not be having so much difficulty fulfilling your criteria or society’s demand right now, and thus you would not need to create a topic on the Purism community forums.

I do not need nor have interest in soliciting others for anything, especially on social networks and other popular places I have severed long ago for various reasons. I operate privacy front-ends to not collect nor care about data from clients, so you will have to find someone else more willing to own your plan instead, ideally yourself:

Good argument - prove it)

To prove it, you need to have user statistics, these statistics can be collected over a certain period of time, then you and I and other users will have evidence. It seems logical to me.

I speak for myself (I never wrote that I speak for the community)!

As for the difficulties of the criteria, there are facts, namely, now there are NO VPS with free distros by default to choose from! Not just Trisquel or Parabola and it is the choice as it works now when you rent a VPS, you are offered Debian Ubuntu by default, etc.

This is a fact that you cannot argue with or prove otherwise!

this example was not addressed to you!

This example is a response to your statement that free distros on VPS are of no use to anyone!

Achieving results has no dependencies on user statistics, only perseverance and resource allocation. It could start with a step as simple as purchasing a Librem Server, or as costly as a Talos II:

Some web hosting providers allow you to install your own distribution, such as BuyVM/FranTech:

That is a generous interpretation of a very brief statement:

Contrary to your interpretation, I am certain free distributions on VPS are useful to someone, but my above statement still firmly stands.

Is that asking too much? I understand the power of defaults but there are VPS providers that allow you to download an ISO from anywhere on the internet so as to make it available to your as yet uninstalled new VPS. (The ISO will disappear after X hours.) So they are in no way preventing you from using Trisquel, Parabola, … They just aren’t making it as easy as staples like Ubuntu, Debian and of course Windows.

To summarise my question, in the OP twice you wrote that something is missing from two specific sites that you provided links for, without saying what specifically is missing from each site. I guess one way of looking at it is a matrix with required attributes on one axis and VPS providers on the other axis, filled in with what you have found so far.

A Markdown table has the same functions. Here is a truncated draft I have been working on for @JCS:

Name (AS) Location(s) Server(s) Bandwidth DDoS Protection Reduced Exit Policy Payment Method(s) Source(s)
HostSlick (AS208046) Lelystad, Netherlands VPS, dedicated Up to 40 Gbps unmetered on dedicated servers 2,000 Gbps on OSI layer 3/4 No PayPal, credit/debit card, Bitcoin, and more (except Monero)[1] Tor Project (2023)[1]
IncogNET (AS210630) Naaldwijk, Netherlands, Allentown, Pennsylvania, US, Kansas City, Missouri, US, and Liberty Lake, Washington, US Shared, VPS, and dedicated Up to 40 Gbps unmetered on Kansas dedicated servers (with inquiry) 40 Gbps on Netherland dedicated servers, upgradeable to 100 Gbps[1] Yes[1] GoCardless, Paypal, Monero and other cryptocurrencies[1] Tor Project (2023)[1][2]

This criteria is mainly focused on DDoS protection and (Tor) abuse handling, since Purism has been affected by DDoS attacks in the past, while (Tor) abuse handling provides more leeway for Purism’s branding.

Yes, you are right, the user has such an option via VNC, which is not the best solution))

It is not a fact that you will be allowed to upload your ISO, you need to look for such VPS providers well, plus those additional points that I mentioned.

I am talking about another story, when there are VPS that have not only ISO with free distros by default, but also equipment, at least with Coreboot or GnuBoot, etc.

We are not talking about a private story, we are talking about VPS with free distros, so the user does not need to buy servers, since he needs an IP address that is physically located in another country.

I answered above, that they MAY allow you to install a free distro is one of the points… you also need to look at the cost of renting a VPS per month, the location of the servers, the minimum ping, paying XMR, the ethics of the site itself, etc.

This is not such a simple task as it might seem to you, these are high requirements.

and my statement is more accurate than yours))

Now that you’ve mentioned my examples, I understand what you mean.

If we talk about the two example sites, then in the first option https://www.gnutransfer.com/ I didn’t see payment by cryptocurrency, an unethical site with google trackers and collecting user statistics, facebook, high price $9.95 for the minimum tariff, it is not specified in which countries there are servers, data transfer speed, etc. This site stands out because there are free distros and that’s it!

The second site Reliable VPS for professionals, since 2008 - Gandi.net is better from an ethical point of view, but only France, there is also no possibility of payment by cryptocurrency. The price is very attractive €5.00 /month excl. tax

I also didn’t study the TOS because at the first stage I see that I don’t like it, maybe there are questions there…

https://incognet.io/ this is a good example of a site, but there are very few countries with VPS servers Luxembourg, Netherlands and several cities in the USA, very poor customer support. As for DDoS Protection, every VPS provider must have it, now it is a very common attack.

Also, the VPS provider must have addresses in TOR and I2P Warrant Canary example NiceVPS.net - Warrant Canary Notice, etc.

Well if you add explicit DDoS protection towards your criteria, that will likely end up being too difficult to fulfill, so you may want to focus on one or two necessary priorities, while defining anything else as a nice-to-have.

I agree with you, it seems that it is simple, but in fact it is not, although all this has existed for a long time, but no one thought of connecting all these points)

Vikings attempted to, but they stopped offering such services after the pandemic.

Too bad… it would have been a great service 100%

I hope my idea will be picked up by PURISM

Currently Purism is using Digital Ocean and Hetzner.

Using for what exactly?

Their infrastructure. For example, forums.puri.sm is using Hetzner, while shop.puri.sm is using Digital Ocean. Some subdomains such as erp2.puri.sm are using Hetzner Cloud.
