Byzantium backports unofficial

No time to explain, just try the new, really big backport updates! The new archive is fully independent form the previous one. So, just unpack, change the line in your source.list file and run upgrade.

And why using such an strange way instead of any git page where I can see what stuff will be downloaded? I rather wait for something official than risking a compromised system.

Because it is just my personal initiative. I could upload the same files separately to GitHub, but it will be binary debs inside and you wont able to use it by apt. So, there is no difference. Moreover, new versions are always carry some risks but also a new experience. This archive is for those who want to get this experience and do not like to want more something official.

Itā€™s your right to do it. I just wounder why not working on the official repo with open source instead of proprietary stuff somewhere else? If I want non free code I also can use Mobian and get also all the current packages of GNOME and Phosh etc.

It is a really good questionā€¦

I simply do not know to whom I should contacted to make an ā€œunstableā€ branch in the official repo and nobody has contacted with me since the first post. The support keeps silence about my problem with usb port and they are unlikely to answer the request to make something different from what they are doing now. I mean Crimson development that is really necessary but not compatible with Byzantium supporting.

Regarding to Mobian and other distrosā€¦ As far as I remember the posts on this forum, each third party distro had problems with some basic things. Iā€™d tried pmOS and was not satisfied with it. May be the situation has been changed today, looks like, for example, Mobian works well for some people.

And the last but not least, you are right about git repo. At least one point may be improved - I could upload changes more frequently and git pull will be easier than upload an archive and update indexes by yourself. So, I think I will use github if I continue to rebuild debs further

I suggest using Codeberg instead:

If you want to go further, you can self-host Forgejo:

So after upgrading, I no longer have access to internet. It (WiFi settings and top bar) says I am connected and ping connects, but firefox, warp and dino do not have access.

Did you upgrade everything possible? What about mobile data?
May be some problems with DNS discoveryā€¦

On my first test (Spare L5), I ran sudo apt upgrade and lost connection but 43 packages did not get upgraded.
On my second test (SD Card), I ran sudo apt full-upgrade and all the packages updated but I still lost connection.

I have not been able to test Mobile Data yet.

Ok. Are you able to open network settings?

  • long tap in the top bar menu on wifi network name
  • Wi-Fi settings
  • Gear in the right side of your network

Nothing strange there? IPv4/v6 tab?

Could you ping another websites by IP (8.8.8.8)?

p.s. I believe it may be some lost in the network settingsā€¦ May be also worth to remove the network and configure again.

So, as far I can not edit the first message I will list the versions here and just make this one as a solution.

What is INSIDE the link:

  • geary 44 (46 crashes for me, not tested), install together with folks-common
  • chatty 0.8.5
  • gnome-calls 47
  • gnome-contacts 47 (takes a lot of memory for me)
  • gnome-calendar 47
  • gnome-maps 47 (setting button does not work)
  • gnome-books 40
  • gnome-authenticator 3.32
  • phosh 0.43.0
  • phosh-osk-stub 0.43
  • squeekboard 1.42.1
  • libcamera 0.3.2
  • systemd 254.16 (do not forget to install manually systemd-resolved and systemd-container)

Enjoy your freedom with Librem 5!

Yes

Everything seems to line up with my DD.

8.8.8.8 pings just fine. As does 0.0.0.0 :man_shrugging:

I did that and nothing changed.

Please try to check if systemd-resolved has been installed and other systemd- related packages, located in the archive, too.

systemd-container can also be required by waydroid, Iā€™ve forgot the list of the new packages that must be installed manuallyā€¦

@ASwyD2 , @spacemanspiffy , could you check gnome-calls when calling to short numbers (3 or 4 digits)? It stopped to work for me and I can not understand the reasonā€¦

gnome-calls 46.3-1 arm64 (my current version)ā€¦

The only ā€œshortā€ numbers I could think of was 911 and 411ā€¦ I tried calling 411 right now and a machine picked up on the other end asking for my city and state.

So I think itā€™s safe to say that ā€œshortā€ numbers are working for me.

The people told me that the problem depends on an operator and mode of the network. Short numbers could fail in 4G but should work in 2G/3G mode, and it really works for me!

Phosh 0.43 is comming!

Repo has been moved to Codeberg.

Did I read correctly that you have Phosh 0.43 in your backports?
Sidenote: On your Codeberg instance, how would I download all the files in one zip?
Could someone who knows such things teach?
Edit: @galilley , you should create a read.me to tell people how to use your packages.
Thanks for your work

With git tools installed:
git clone https://codeberg.org/galilley/librem5-byzantium-backports.git
The link is available to copy from codeberg page. It copies you the folder and all containing files without zip. You also can use the web-GUI and hit right to the link I spoke before on the ... button - everything else is self-explanation.

And Phosh-version is 0.43, not 43.
