That’s awesome news; thanks. I hope you guys are also working on adjusting (correcting?) the shipping cost anomalies in the Store, e.g. over US$20 to ship the tiniest of items, even domestically.

Our DHL rep stopped by HQ ~1.5 weeks ago and, IIRC, there isn’t much else to do on our part. I just pinged the ops team for an update (they return to the office tomorrow).

Update from ops:

We have been approved. However, our online account needs the setting enabled. When I spoke to [DHL] tech support, they said our account rep needs to call them to do it. He is, however, on a two week vacation. I have tried emailing others, but no luck yet.

Thanks for asking that question. IMO, The problem isn’t the battery, I think it’s DHL. They are very expensive compared to other shippers. No one is locked in to only DHL. Purism could use Fedex, for outside US boundaries as we always found them more reliable, cheaper and just as fast.

I wonder, why is Purism waiting for somebody to get back from vacation is a shining example of DHL’s care and concern for it’s customers - not!
It may be cheaper for Purism to ship stuff DHL, but it’s the added costs by DHL. They hold the item until the extra fees, duties r are paid. That increases the wait time, and one needs to monitor shipping because for me, they wanted the money before releasing my L5 and gave me 48 hours on a long weekend.

Canadians, since Trump declared war on Canada, should check ahead to see what the real costs are for Canadians or eat any sticker shock.

Good observation. I requested an update from the shipping manager.

Update: Our shipping manager is pushing hard on this. We’ve already obtained approval but there are apparently some communication issues between the DHL representative and DHL tech support. We still await action from DHL tech support.

Good news

We are fully approved for international shipping of standalone batteries!

Bad news

The carrier is charging a significant fee for shipment of dangerous goods - much more than anticipated. We are now working to update the shop to account for these additional charges if a standalone battery is purchased, necessitating the “dangerous goods” label.

Additional data point: A standalone Librem 14 battery shipped to Zurich, Switzerland, would cost $264.39 USD. Ouch.

What we’re doing about it

  1. We continue to investigate alternative cost-effective shipping carriers.
  2. We are beginning to investigating options for a replacement EU-based distribution center.
    • This does not imply that RMAs would be handled at this location at this time; an EU-based service center is projected to resume further into the future as finances allow.
  3. We are gradually improving our documentation to include more part numbers for third-party purchasing and user-serviceability.

That looks like a DHL get-lost fee. They want to say they offer it, but don’t want to do it. There are professional carries phone numbers, and if they don’t use L5, the numbers are in the book as they say.

Two things I see Purism being responsible for:

  1. Adding a caveat in the ad about additional batteries.:heavy_check_mark: done. :clap: Yea!

  2. With great haste, contact professional carries like:
    FedEx
    United States Postal Services

With the sudden and shocking events I think it is going to, if it hasn’t already, make it much more difficult and expensive to find a backup battery.

The “dangerous goods”, “fuel surcharge”, “transportation charges” fees are insane. I recently bought a 1382 Wh LiFePO4 40lb “Electric Solar Generator” (battery+inverter+charge controller+USB-pd-out + AC in/out that can output 1800W) for $400 delivered (international shipment).

I’m trying to get a replacement battery for a Librem 5 for a while, here outside the US, but there are no replacement batteries available for the Librem 5 or any other Librem device. Pursim doesn’t ship batteries without a computer to the rest of the world. And I must say I’m sick of it like many others.

It has been over five years and Purism wasn’t able to find a solution for this problem and I don’t think they really tried or care.

I’ve ordered a lot of FPV (drone) stuff from the US over the last 5 years (from big and small companies like RDQ, Pyrodrone, FPVCycle, …) and sometimes with lipo batteries and the stuff were send via FedX, DHL, etc. without a problem and the shipping wasn’t extra expensive - I paid $30 shipping in nov’24 for a set with a lipo battery - overall $160. And the cardboard box had a lipo battery sticker on the outside.

Please hire an expert (transport specialist, -lawyer) and find a solution.

What about sending a battery together with a Raspberry Pi Zero ($20).The Zero is a complete Linux computer with HDMI out, USB ports, etc. And if that isn’t enough. Add a tiny voltage regulator circuit ($5) together with a 3D printed housing ($10) for the battery, to connect the Pi Zero to the battery and sell it as a set or DIY set.

Pine64 has a warehouse in Poland (east europe) to distribute their products in Europe. And I’m pretty sure Purism could double their Librem 5 sales world wide with a warehouse in Europe. Or just look for a partner or distributor in Europe. There are so many options. Please find a solution, FAST!

The situation has changed from “can’t ship batteries at all except with computer” to “can ship batteries by themselves but it’s horribly expensive”. So I don’t think the above conclusion is fair.

You always have the option of: remove your current battery, send phone to Purism, receive phone back with battery inside. That’s going to be relatively expensive too but it could be cheaper than the current arrangement.

Have you tried Spare Battery LIbrem 5 Mobile Phone | FLOSS Shop EN ? I got 2 from them couple of months back, they were solid. Shop is run by Nicole Faerber, former Purism CTO.

Thank you very much!! That solves my Librem 5 battery problem, but it doesn’t solve the battery problems for the other Librem devices. Maybe Nicole Faerber from the Floss Shop can help and act as a distributor? I wouldn’t care if she adds 50% or 100% to the regular price. It’s still much much cheaper than sending a device to Purism (and more secure). And it can’t be that complicated to negotiate with her. Getting other spare parts (not only batteries) from her shop would be great as well. Thank you so much lakei!

I hear you, I’m in the market for a SparkLAN WiFi/BT upgrade but cannot justify the $65 shipping costs from the US :sweat_smile: Which reminds me, I wanted to ask that FLOSS shop to see if they can get their hands on one :crossed_fingers:
