Cheese app no longer working

I recently discovered that the Cheese app is no longer working on my Librem 11.
None of the buttons seem to work and instead of showing images of what the camera is pointing at, it says “No device found”.
How can I get the Cheese app to work great again, like it did originally?

You could try reinstalling the package.

Thanks for your help…How do I do that?

sudo apt reinstall cheese

Do I have to run a command to uninstall Cheese first and if so, what command? Thanks

No.

I reinstalled cheese with the sudo command and then restarted the L11 but unfortunately it didn’t solve the issue…it still says “No device found”.

Does any application work with the camera?

No…I just installed the “Camera” app from the PureOS Store and it doesn’t work either.
It says “No cameras available” so now it seems that my issue must be a hardware problem. Thanks for your question. I will inquire to support@puri about what can be done.

I wouldn’t assume that at this stage, but it seems as if it is not an application problem.

Other suggestion: Do a Live Boot of the Librem 11 and see whether the camera is available and functions normally. (That of course assumes that you have such a flash drive, preferably prepared some time ago and known to work.)

It may be helpful to review the system journal / system log from a normal boot and see whether there are any error messages that might pertain to the camera.

PS With the disclaimer that I don’t own a Librem 11, so don’t know details, I would look at lsusb output to see whether camera(s) are listed.

Also, I believe that there are two cameras (front and rear). I guess that neither of them is available.

I do not have a Live Boot flash drive so I can’t try that step.
You are correct with your assumption that neither camera is working.
When you say to look at 1susb output to see whether camera(s) are listed, is that connected with the Live Boot suggestion or if not, how do I do that exactly?
Thanks for your help!

That is an ‘L’ not a ‘one’ (short for ‘list usb’) lsusb lsusb The font makes it look like a 1
Yeah just type that (lsusb) in the terminal with your current setup and report back what it says

I was able to get the following info by opening another terminal window but I am still not able to get past the Package configuration grey screen mentioned above without closing the terminal and stopping the full-upgrade before it completes.

They look like cameras. So perhaps no hardware fault but rather something wrong in the operating system.

It may still be worth making and trying a Live Boot. That will at least isolate any problems with settings, configuration, rogue packages installed, …
