Does the L5 work when plugged into power but without a battery?

Unfortunately no, I was hoping for that L5 would have worked that way, at least I could still use it and figure out about this whole USBC-PD charging issue later on. That was one of the few first things I tried.

Without any second battery to rule out possible causes, I can’t decide for sure if the charging circuitaty within L5 got damaged or just the battery got so deplated that it won’t charge anymore. In the later case, there is still hope with a second/replacement battery if somehow I could find one. As battery alone cannot be shipped and as my Dogwood series L5 takes a 2000 mAH LPP-502 instead of 4500 mAH LPP-503 which is available on Purism website, hopes are very low to find this very same battery for Dogwood.

Right but my Librem 5 does work that way. If I plug it into power without a battery, the light flashes green and it boots on like normal except that the light then flashes red periodically to indicate “weird power state” (which in this case is because no battery).

If yours doesn’t do that, isn’t it a sure sign you have a worse problem than battery?

Hi @dos

Have you know if Librem 5 can support HS Mode?

So with HS Mode Enabled we can use the Librem 5 powered from charger bypassing the built-in battery, this will usefull for Dock Mode, which will increase performance and freedom

I have no idea what do you mean by “HS Mode”, but the Librem 5 can be powered from USB-C PD source with no battery as long as you stay within the provided power budget (so you’ll want a source that provides 3A at 5V).

hs mode: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dKULl_y_bNM&pp=0gcJCRsBo7VqN5tD

But not that USB-PD only work if device is fully ON to negociate?

Just a QUICK example for hs mode enabled?

Oh, it’s some silly branding then. You can (and always could) both disable charging and keep the battery plugged in so it can still service power spikes, or make it act as if the battery was pulled out without doing so physically.

When I pulled out the battery physically and then used convergence, it would either:

  • Not boot from USB power (if no battery was present and the only power was coming through a dock between the charger and L5)
  • If the L5 battery was removed while it was already running, it would run fine for several minutes then eventually die at times of higher activity (spikes, perhaps, as mentioned by dos)

Docks usually provide much less than 3A and many won’t handle powering up with no battery correctly (but it would be possible for a good dock to do both).

hmm, yes, can be worse problem than battery.

I have so far tried all available USBC power supply combinations I could (1) Apple 140W USBC charger (2) Steam Deck USBC charger (3) Dell Laptop & LapDock USBC chargers (4) 5x GaN USBC -300W, 240W, 200W, 108W, 100W _ Belkin/Verbatim/Ugreen/Another Brand (5) NexDock USBC charger (5) And all normal phone USBC adapters I could see!

I will examine in detail which one is spec’d for 5V-3A and will try once more tonight.
