Introducing the Liberty Phone

Thank you so much for your post!!!
As I written, if I see Geary working well, Iā€™ll buy Librem One service and Iā€™ll create a new email leaving Gmail!
So I just want test Geary with Gmail

I did not say special characters arenā€™t allowed in general. In fact I donā€™t know if Geary supports all, a few or none. I just know that special characters can cause such problems. That doesnā€™t mean all special characters are unsupported, but maybe some specific ones.

What case is that?

There are some legitimate reasons to restrict what characters can be used in a password but on the other hand any such restriction weakens the password against a brute force attack. :frowning:

Honestly, for a password that is only entered once and thereafter securely stored (such as applies to Geary on the Librem 5), you might as well choose a longer password in order to compensate for the loss of special characters. However I understand that the password may be being used on more than one device. But then I donā€™t understand why anyone would use gmail at all.

Many servers will mitigate against brute force attacks anyway by placing restrictions on how many guesses you can have.

Yes I am using a 128GB storage, 4 GB ram device, and I have been using it since fall 2023. As with any Purism product, shipping occurs when the product is ready and not instantaneously. I purchased one of these Liberty Phones in fall 2023 and it shipped to me in about 2 months, but then I purchased a second one in the spring of 2024 and it shipped after something like 5 or 6 months. I do not know the reason for the difference, but I assume the process of assembling within the USA is probably more involved and more human than assembling overseas.

Edit:
My reason for purchasing a second one was not any issue or problem with the device, but rather that I wanted a backup because the device appeared too enjoyable, and so I assumed that the new world order would destroy Purism for making them ā€“ and create a future where these were no longer available. This is quite possibly an absurdist/extremist opinion on my part, and I know that, so another way to look at the situation is that maybe I was just throwing money at Purism to support them.

Edit 2:
Fixed a typo that suggested I bought my second one in spring 2023, which was not correct, and I meant to describe this as spring 2024

Thanks for the input. I bought the 5, and 5usa on eBay, so shipped within a week. I canā€™t handle the half year time frame. Ha. I guess I will wait for the used ones. Or maybe, I heard purism does plan to have parts(ram, ā€¦) to upgrade, I think I saw it somewhere in the purism forum.

Looking back at the exact records, what I see is that:

  • It was only 1.5 month, not 2 months, before my Fall 2023 order shipped
  • My Spring 2024 order was labeled Backordered in the order, whereas the Fall 2023 order was not, and it was 5 months (not 6 months) before I received my email that it shipped

So, if you cannot handle the 5 month time frame, you can review before placing an order whether it is labeled as Backordered. Apparently, now that I look back at it, this was likely the difference in my case.

For what itā€™s worth, because the second order was trying to throw money at Purism to support them, I included some of the extras like a USB-C dock. That may have slowed down the order. If you donā€™t include the extras, and donā€™t see the Backordered notice on the store, itā€™s possible you might get the much faster shipping time.

I just figured I would mention these specifics in case it helps you know what to expect.

EDIT:
After further review, the 1.5 month lag time before my first order shipped was artificially inflated. At the time, I emailed Purism support and asked them to put my order on hold and not ship it for about 2 weeks while I went on vacation. So, again, if it doesnā€™t say Backordered when you make your purchase, I think itā€™s possible you might see a pretty good time-to-ship. I just wanted to make sure I wasnā€™t spreading inaccurate information here.
