I’m going to call it a phone, because that’s what I bought it for. I just wanted one, since they are computers, more compatible with my normal computing environment.

If anyone asks, “What kind of phone?”, I’ll call it a Librem 5.

As far as how words sound feel easy to say and natural in conversation, pcphone sounds easy enough, as well as being easily understandable and conveying an image. It describes both function (computing and phone) as well as the extent which those are done (as in full extent, not just “kinda smart” but a proper computer). This would be a good choice for a daily word in speech and forum messages. Some of the others are more commercial terms (with some baggage/connotations from “previous owners”) or are more official terminology, which have their place also, but in different contexts and texts.

Let’s not go there. The L5 is here to make us forget that brand.

Since you look for a name of the category, pcphone is correct, but I think that “ComputerPhone” sounds better. Just remove the p. CPhone of computerphone.

Tricorder.

It’s a pocketable device filled with various sensors, wireless (and wired) data transfer capabilities and a touchscreen.

I object to that - but only until the camera is capable of spectral analysis (identifying matter by wavelength - ghosts are a bonus), alsa can use speaker and microphone for ultrasound imaging of body and wifi can do double duty for radar and 3D-mapping of surrounding area. Current sensors are mostly for internal use and device metrics. That is to say, we’re getting there - just need to upgrade a couple of sensors to reach out into the world. Maybe next version…?

CPhone is more conveniently CP in daily talk. It would be symmetrical (regards to PC), I’ll give you that.

He he he, yes CP is nice!

Don’t say that on 4chan.

What is 4chan?

A “handie-talkie” or just “HT” is a ham radio term that means the same as “walkie talkie”, except that it operates on ham radio frequencies. But I think the Hams didn’t wanted their radios to be mistaken for children’s toys or heaven forbid, a similar tool used by citizen’s band radio users (who are sometimes looked down upon by amateur radio operators). I agree that the word “terminal” isn’t such a good choice either.

Whatever the choice of terms ends up being in this case, Purism should trade mark that term as soon as is possible. At one time we only wiped our faces with “Kleenex”, and not so much with facial tissues. At one time, the only practical way to make a hard copy of a document was to “xerox” it. Even now, some people don’t search the web. They “Google” something. With a new type of device (especially if it takes off in the market later), Purism should own the trade mark before the it gets popular.

GnuPhone? PocketGnu? Hey mister, is that a PocketGnu or are you just happy to see me?

Sick Brick?

I know probably not the best connotation regarding size and functionality, but rolls off the tongue nice. Let’s reclaim brick as a positive not a negative…lol.

@treebeard: You also can install Windows. Free also mean to be free to make bad decisions. :stuck_out_tongue: So Gnu may don’t fully match this.

@raenrfm: Pinephone is no brick at all. The category shouldn’t only match Purism devices.

The joke was that “CP” could be interpreted as “Child Pornography” or more politically correctly these days CSAI (Child Sexual Abuse Imagery).

So I think CP as an abbreviation for “cPhone” (or variants thereof) would be a non-starter.

A, OK, I did not know. computerphone is a nice term. It is more technical than “smartphone” which is the truth.

computerphone is not catchy, too long. Maybe comp(h)one will do. As in: “I’m looking forward too receive my L5 compone:smiley:
