I got over the ocean with 5 batteries for my Librem 5. They are battle hardened and not in the best condition. But it seems like I only really need 3 or 4 and probably not 5. Would anybody want to have a social meetup party somewhere in Europe where I give away one or two to folks who seem like they’ll put them to good use?
I’m not very familiar with Europe so I don’t know good social meeting places where we could remain anonymous. But I have the weekends off from work so its conceivable I could fly somewhere. I’ll be coming and going in a manner such that I’ll be on this continent for a while now. Curious what people think. I speak only English and I had a Spanish class 8 or 10 years ago.
♫ My battery lies over the ocean,
my battery lies over the sea,
my battery lies over the ocean,
oh bring back bring back,
bring back my battery to me, to me,
oh bring back, bring back,
bring back my battery to me.♫
But, in all seriousness, pinephone people constructed a battery (6000mAh) + keyboard back. But it used their pogo-pin layout. Keyboard - PINE64 . It’s a thought.
If you would be interested in coming to Warsaw next weekend I could show you a few interesting places here You would need to book a hotel for yourself though.
Sorry, I missed this Warsaw idea/suggestion. Been focused on work and just crashing on the weekends recently. To be honest, as an ignorant United Statesian myself, when I first saw your message I misremembered thinking that Warsaw was a part of Russia and so I would most likely be killed for going there since the Russians probably do not like the United Statesians. But then I looked it up and found out that Warsaw isn’t part of Russia yet. So I could probably actually go there. But I don’t know much about Poland.
Poland is part of the EU. So if you can visit the EU at all, you should be able to move around within the EU without restriction.
You are spoiled for choice with good places to visit in the EU - so if it were my decision, just find those who actually want a battery and then work out a suitable compromise location.
Hopefully never again, we’re propably the second anti russia state in the world right now
Well, if you will be interested sometime in the future I’ll gladly guide you and tell something interesting about our history. Also as people before mentioned - we’re in EU and still pretty pro-US, so you would be welcome here without any problematic situations.
Personaly i think all humans are the same. And Poland was an early adaptor in europe that have a parlament (like 17xx). The idear was born there and carry on to the france.
However poland was to early with its idear of a system to push the rich out of political order by a democratic parlament in more then 2 languages. - right now i like poland but wind can change to not democratic folks, like *2#+! everywhere.
We are all connected togeather with history, knowledge and open source that we can not dismentel democracy right now… if you travel better not leave any trace or like or comment this openly.
My Russian friend lives in L.A., he was at the seige of Leningrad as a child. He ate a lot of potatoes. Later worked as an ALGOL programmer in Kiev and traded CPU time for cigarettes. Started in the U.S. at Crenshaw Blvd with $200 in his pocket, ended up rich as a software vendor.
I went to the office on the weekend and was doing some sweet workaholism. Then last night I did some escapism, and it has blended together into me being quite tired.
Amdist being tired, my employer has now asked me to install a new Android app for which I know of no Phosh equivalent. (Not because there cannot be an equivalent, but because the app is created by the soulles megacorporations to demand oligarchy drvices.)
I’ve been treating my batteries rough. I care more about my whims and humanity than the replaceable batteries, and I’ve let them run dry more often than I’d care to admit. I have half a mind to stop at the vodafone shop between my hotel and the London branch of my company, and buy an Android like they want me to do, to then use it for their App as they have requested.
So, there was probably never a better time for me to get on a plane to Poland for the weekend for the lulz and start handing out L5 batteries to save the energy of my friends-yet-to-be.
If only somebody from the US could take with them 50 batteries or so, sell them to somebody in the EU and that person would then sell & ship them to whomever was interested.
I don’t have 50, but I do have 5. Also, I didn’t file any paperwork for VAT or whatever, so I don’t think I would sell them, I would be more inclined to just give them away.
But when I get back to US, buying them seemed to be as easy as buying candy, so I may as well give away all 5 by the time I leave this side of the ocean. That said, if ai go to a battery party in the next couple of weekends I would probably want to keep a few for another couple of months while I’m still here.
This setup (US person taking bunch of batteries with them to EU person that would then ship them around the EU) would not work, I just realized, for the same reason that Purism cannot ship them to EU persons. National postal services, such as Royal Mail (UK) and PostNL (NL) all prohibit sending solo lithium batteries by mail, both domestically and internationally.
At this point, if you are really pressed, I think @irvinewade made the suggestion repeatedly that you could remove the battery from your L5, send it to Purism, and they could send it back including “the minimum number [of batteries] required to power the device plus two spares”. I have no idea how long this process would take though, nor what the cost, besides the new batteries, would be.
Either way, it is going to need a “battery party” in some central, compromise location in Europe.
Or a 3D-printed “fake” mobile phone that acts as a container for one (or two) batteries. Purism might not engage with that idea but some EU rando might.
This arrangement may well be safer than a real mobile phone since “accidental activation” is impossible and the 3D-printed container can be designed to ensure that movement within the container is unlikely.
