Ever since the phone was turned on with the carrier involved, the mobile bars show a amber square over the two right-side bars with a exclamation in it.
Is that a carrier thing, or I did not select the right setting somewhere?

This means that data connection over cellular modem isn’t active.
Currently it’s the same icon for both when you requested data connection to be active but it failed, and when you intentionally disabled (or never enabled) data connection.

So for starters you would want to go into Settings / Mobile and look at “Mobile Data”.
