Hardware and software are different: *You buy hardware. *You license (or essentially rent) software.
I prefer to buy software as well. If I buy a book, I’m free to sell it to who I like or give it away. This should be the case for software as well. At least there should be a choice for ‘rent’ or ‘buy’. That’s why I use open source where ever possible.
