Question About Librem 14 RAM

Hey all,

I’ve been thinking about getting a Librem 14 for a while now, and just had some brief questions regarding the hardware.

So, my first question is whether the RAM is soldered onto the board, or if it allows for upgrades by replacement of the RAM sticks. I would assume the latter, but just want to make sure.

My other question is if anyone has tried to upgrade the ram on their device to 96GB of ram with 2x48GB SODIMMs? I am aware that the site lists 64GB as the maximum RAM, however, many older motherboards and processors list maximum RAMs that can be safely exceeded (for example, the i7-6600U lists a maximum of 32GB RAM, but has been safely upgraded to 64GB before). Has anyone tried this, or is aware of if this is possible on the Librem 14?

Thank you all in advance!

No.

Thank you for the linked post!

May I have some explanation as to why 48x2 SODIMMs would not work? Or, if it simply hasn’t been tested yet?

The latter.

Depends which site you mean. The Intel web site lists a maximum of 64 GB for the CPU (i7-10710U). Anything more than that would be unsupported by Intel if it even works.

But, no, I am not aware that anyone has tried this and, if it fails, precisely why it fails.

Depending on what your requirements are, you might want to make a pre-sales enquiry to Purism (support@puri.sm) regarding a couple of upcoming models that may have later CPUs and hence may support a larger maximum for the amount of RAM. Or maybe @jonathon.hall is willing to comment?

I was referring to both the Intel website as well as the Purism site (where you buy the laptop).

Your recommendation is greatly appreciated, I will email them and see what they say.

Thanks!

I am not aware of any DDR4 SODIMM modules that exist larger than 32 GB. The 48 GB modules I’ve seen are all DDR5. If you’ve seen some larger DDR4 modules though, please share :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes this is true, Whiskey Lake (in Mini v1) similarly lists compatibility only up to 16 GB modules, but 32 GB modules do seem to work. I suspect this is because 32 GB modules did not exist yet at the time the specs were published, so they could not test and guarantee it would work.

Thanks for the info, I realized that I had only been noticing 48GB RAM DDR5 modules, my mistake!
