Yes, I have this problem both at home when I connect to the internet via Wi-Fi and when I turn off Wi-Fi and connect to the internet via mobile data. Until three weeks ago, I had a different provider. I had this problem then too.
When I connected to the internet via my friend’s Wi-Fi, nothing changed.
I have tested various browsers in the meantime. Always the same result. However, this only affects Qwant. This problem does not occur with other search engines. The problem does not occur on the desktop either. Here I use Zorin Linux. And then I also have a phone with Sailfish OS. Different SIM card, but same provider. The browser here is based on Gecko. Here I also have to solve a captcha from time to time when I visit the Qwant website. But once I’ve solved it, everything works fine.
trying a fresh network without a fresh browser profle is a bad start, as u might be tracked via cookies/whatever…
i think firefox --profile can help that, or about:profiles, or mv -T ~/.mozilla{,.bak} and then rm -r ~/.mozilla; mv -Tf ~/.mozilla{.bak,} (close ff before doing so and check it is really closed with ps -ef | grep [f]irefox)
Or, more user-friendly than hacking directories behind Firefox’s back, firefox --ProfileManager and go from there.
In some respects, just starting with a new profile would be a good troubleshooting step anyway (in case some profile setting is causing this problem). However against that is that Epiphany doesn’t work either.
i guess i saw that command too, and didn’t try it for now, i was only sure about the fs level operation, and also, thats the most universal knowledge here, so i guess it did worth to write those…
btw finding firefox magic spells is challenging, on many fronts… outdated partial docs, endless klingonish sauces, random collections…
if epiphany was tried at home (/whatever initial place), then it might indicate nothing at the different network…
If you are paying for the service, sure. In any case, I suspect they will just (rightly) say that they know nothing about the Librem 5 and that it is most likely something specific to the environment on the Librem 5.
It doesn’t hurt to ask.
If they are “nice” then they will at least shed light on / elaborate on the exact conditions under which the error message, “You have been blocked”, is output - but that will still leave the OP trying to figure out which condition applies and why that condition is met.
I guess if they are really “nice”, they would change the error message so that instead of “several possible reasons”, they will show the actual specific reason. They are currently using a known IT anti-pattern.
so the one who will write to them can tell that this affects many librem 5 users, and we are here to collab, and maybe they care about their userbase and product quality, and they can hope for more paid subscriptions … and better reputation among more tech savy ppl! stay positive, its not that a lone hacker failed to abuse their free service, and maybe even beyond librem 5… they have enough reasons to care, and it is related to their income… i dunno the number of librem 5 users, or even the purism forum users, but i guess it should be in the order of 10-100k’s! btw, do you have such numbers?!
Hmmm. Firefox on Librem 5 (internet via WiFi) seemed to work OK. Then I moved to Epiphany on Librem 5.
It then did ask me to complete a CAPTCHA, which I think I stuffed up because I wasn’t paying attention. (Maybe I really can’t be told apart from a computer. ) The result for me:
Access blocked
We detected unusual activity from your device or network.
Reasons may include:
Rapid taps or clicks
JavaScript disabled or not working
Automated (bot) activity on your network (IP aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd)
Use of developer or inspection tools
Need help? Submit feedback.
I imagine that my IP address is now poison. So the question is: how long is that for? does it time out? do I need to ask for a block to be lifted?
And going back to Firefox on Librem 5, it too is now blocked.
And Firefox on desktop (behind same public IP address) is also now blocked.
My guess is that they have their “unusual activity” detector set to be too sensitive.
I might disconnect router and reconnect router if Qwant is still blocking me tomorrow. (That will get me a new IP address.)
No browser works for me. When I restart the router and try via Wi-Fi, it works once or twice, then I get blocked again. However, I have never been blocked on my desktop. But that runs Zorin Linux.
