Thats 18 developers. . . . .
You can install the linux kernel on a calculator, it would perhaps even run on a redundant array of independent potatoes; but that does not mean anything.
The second part… Are you serios?
When you decided to purchase the Librem 5 were you unaware that it was a linux phone? Were you unaware that it was a first of it’s kind? Were you aware that Purism doesn’t have billions of dollars and 1000’s of engineers to develop a phone from the ground up? C’mon man…Did the first Tesla’s that people bought work flawlessly? Heck no…they STILL have issues. I think if you were unaware of these things that’s on you, it’s all there for you to read, and you could have joined the forum and seen all the issues that have come and been resolved over time and be aware of what issues there still are.
What this is, is that the current state of affairs is that people have no patience or dedication to an idea. I want exactly what I want and I want it right now. I dropped my cash over 3 years ago not even expecting to get anything, but I wanted to support this idea because the founder of this company’s concerns resonated with me. I’m sick of being tracked like cattle. If nobody does anything about it then it’s only going to get worse. I want to support those people. If you don’t, Apple or Samsung or whoever else builds a tracking device will gladly take your cash and all your gory details on a daily basis.
If the camera application does not support automatic adjustments and pictures take long, then you’re not running an up-to-date system.
Since you also say that
then I believe your updates are broken somehow, and that’s why you get a poor experience.
What exactly are you doing in order to update?
I was aware it was linux but I thought; by now, it would be as smooth as android. Well, not far off. I was telling all my friends about it, and i passed over my iwn hard earned money for it.
I got bored of them dragging it out, and so did many many others ie Rob Braxman; who then went and did his own thing in a quarter of the time.
So he is using commodity hardware, i get that. But from todays readings Purisms new wifi card uses non free blobs too. I cant see thia phone being a success with a handful of devs, sorry.
I can’t speak for this person, only myself. I have encountered multiple times where the graphical updater just spins indefinitely (hours) and will not update. Sometimes a reboot will solve the issue, other times I have to resort to the terminal to update.
It will be nice when the GUI can be reliably used for updates.
Do you have some external repositories enabled in Flatpak, like Flathub perhaps?
I do have flathub enabled currently, however I have experienced this multiple times before enabling flathub.
You missed it up, i wrote: “A Computer like Linux”… and this is not equal but it should be. On a usual Computer or a Turing Machine, you should have the power to do Math with all rights and have a full access on your physical Device to write Programs like Math on a Paper.
So now try to convince me that you have the same Power on a Non-Linux Device. On Software Level and on the Hardware one for example.
I am sure i can run Linux on an self developed Turing Machine, but for example not Windows, because of some DRM and License Keys, just to show you a proof on the low level.
I see this quite often. Doing pkill gnome-software
in a terminal kills PureOS Store. If you start it then again it works. This happens also on my Fedora systems. Somewhere upstream is a bug reported for this.
I saw a video a week ago from Rob Braxman. It was a live-stream (I watched later “non live”) when he was speaking about L5. He got it at same time as I got mine. But what did he speak about? As much bullshit as possible just to make advertise to his degoogled Android phone. For example he said “camera is not working … oh look here, they got that under construct item that tells us it’s not working”. What the fuck … I mean to that time it got even an update to implement all that auto functions.
He spoke about like the device was still from 2019/2020 without any further updates. His own phone had more talking space than the L5 in a video about L5. I think that tells all he tried to do: advertising his own business.
There is no libre modem in the world that Purism could use. You can tell a lot about Purism and what doesn’t work fine (refunds as most famous example), but blame them about the modem is far from a valid point. Not just because they cannot get something better, but also because they did and do what they could to prevent the device and communications get compromised by modems non free blobs.
Don’t trust the liars in the world. All the questions you have get answered proper by the community here on forum - you just need to ask. Even negative things. For me it’s a daily driver that works well in most situations. I can understand that it’s nothing for everyone, but it’s by far not as bad as some people tell you (for example Braxmann).
Its been doing that from the very beginning for me and nothing has changed in +1yr, however I found a workaround that also has always worked for me:
- make sure you are connected to the internet before you open the store app,
- open store app,
- go to update section and wait until it completes
No other button press required.
If it is endlessly spinning say after 10min.
- close store app,
- open gnome usage app
- kill store app if still running
- delete memory of store app using usage app
- reopen store app
- select an app scroll through details give it a minute
- go to updates section and wait till it completes checking for updates,
This always works for me 8). Also i have seen it literally spin for 10minutes before showing a pureos .deb repository package update.
If store doesn’t work, I just close it and give a look another time later. As long as I have internet connection (W-Lan) nothing easier than that. Often it shows everything instantly than. No need for killing app in background etc. Often using suspend in between - not sure if it change something (because it also disconnects to internet).
Here is a link to the issue: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/-/issues/1118. There are many links to other related and duplicate issues there.
Quick note so share what I do to exchange files between the phone and a computer. If you have an ssh server on the phone (in my opinion essential on any Linux machine: apt install openssh-server
(or search for that in the store if you don’t want to use the command line)),
then you can very easily connect to the phone by ssh from any device that’s connected to the same WiFi network. On KDE, do fish:(your phone hostname or ip address here)
in the file explorer’s address bar.
EDIT: as @dos mentioned, putting “(hostname).local” works, I didn’t know that. Then no need to know the phone’s address, just the hostname (pureos
is the default on the phone) and the username (default is purism
).
Looks like this:
On Gnome there’s something called connect to a network device or something, in the file manager.
Yes, you need to find out what the phone’s IP address is, so someone who doesn’t know anything about networking will not be able to do it. Clearly we do need some very basic system and networking knowledge to use this phone, like with any Linux system.
With mDNS enabled, you can resolve it by simply using <hostname>.local
Maybe yes. Maybe no.
You would only really need to use mDNS if you don’t have a local DNS server. With a local DNS server the hassle is keeping the data up to date i.e. if you had a volatile local network (devices being acquired and disposed of at a significant rate) you might want mDNS even with a local DNS server. On the other hand, I’ve seen a few vulnerabilities in the common mDNS implementation so you also have to trade-off the area of your attack surface.
Personally I choose not to enable mDNS but that’s not to disrespect anyone else’s choice - as long as it is an informed choice.
But then I use DHCP with fixed IP address assignments so
a) I always have to keep the data up to date anyway, and
b) I always know the IP address anyway (because I just assigned it).
Fair point, however, with 18 developers across their range of products is equivalent to pissing in the wind.
One problem with this is with a short few digit pin that is the password to ssh to the phone is incredibly weak and easily cracked given a small amount of time. A few options to help with this is restricting ssh to key based access, only turning on the server when at home and turning off when done or a firewall restricting traffic from a known ip or ip range
Hmm, yes and no. On one hand of course everyone wishes to get faster progress. On the other hand we have access to the whole range of desktop applications and the power to modify things by ourselves (or even help to develop if we’re programmer). So Purism also don’t need to change es much as Google did with Android.
I totally understand that the progress is not fast enough for everyone. But I can just speak for myself and can tell you, that the current state is good enough to live with all the downsides - knowing that a lot of those will also be fixed more and more. And there are also further trues: you can do things you won’t be able to do on usual smartphones.
But the real question is: what do you want/need and with what downsides can you live with? Tell us your needs and we will answer those individual questions. Maybe you decide to give it a try or wait another year for the important fix of the feature you need or you will be sure that selling it is still the best option.
Why I’m telling it? Because I have the feeling that you’re between like and dislike and want to sell it “just to be save”. And to be save we also can answer your questions.
