I find it difficult to look at the matter from this perspective. If a device prevents me from running a FSF-endorsed distribution of my choice, doesn’t it limit some of my software freedoms? Also, from an ordinary user perspective, when the firmware binary is available, the advantage of newer technology is likely to become obsolete by the time it is freed if ever.
