After many attempts I still cannot register in the Community Purism Wiki.
Could it be becuause I have switched from Win 7, to Ubuntu on my PC.
I had many problems with a lot of sites as suddenly everyone thought my passwords were compromised because I was using Linux. btw I tried to reset on Win7 also and that also failed.
Just asking if anyone has a suggestion. I sent emails to Joao but also without resolution
I don’t know what effect a “switch” might have had but there is certainly no problem to use Ubuntu when registering (as that is what I did) … but that was a while ago so I don’t remember what the process was.
I had many many problems switching from Win 7 to Ubuntu. Gmail thought my gmail passwords were hacked. Github wanted me to verify my PC. Github is still a problem. Any web site I tried to use that I was previously registered with I had to basically go through an identify verification, banks etc.
I think I may have previously registered on the Wiki on Win7. (no sure)
That sort of problem in general could arise from three sources:
- the web site has stored a unique identifier in a cookie on your computer and hence recognises the change of computer (unless you migrate cookies, and I suspect most people would not or could not)
- the web site has fingerprinted your computer (your browser) and hence recognises the change of computer
- a more sophisticated arrangement where shared secrets are stored for OTP generation and those shared secrets are not migrated
I am close to certain that the third of those does not apply to the Community Wiki.
I don’t think the first of those applies because I see no cookie right now in my browser and I basically don’t allow persistent cookies anyway.
GMAIL sends me a phone authenticator every time I use it in a browser. But like most users here, I clear my cookies every time I exit my browser.
When I use my GMAIL account in Thunderbird however, GMAIL doesn’t give a shit and just sends me the damn emails. Of course I lose the document “sharing” features by not using it in a browser and other GMAIL bells and whistles.
Potentially, you lose a lot more just by using GMAIL.
Regarding GMAIL, I have a paid account now with librem.one. Very reasonable charge.
BUT BUT BUT I have recorded my GMAIL address with so so many places that it cannot just shut down GMAIL. I am slowely switching everything over to my librem.one email.
I considered using Proton.email but the proton emails are encrypted with my Proton email password and as I change my passwords regularly I forgot my old passwords and cannot see old Proton email. I think if I used a reliable password manager I would have had more success with Protommail, but I think I stuffed that up. I just am not up to speed with password managers. fwiw I use IMAP protocal in GMAIL so I see my gmails no matter how I access. For a while I had to turn Gmail allow less secure apps to be able to use Tbird but then Tbird got updated with security that Gmail accepted, so now it works fine.
My next project is understanding Tbird end to end encryption.
Librem.one email is fine for the privacy concerned. But I run a small business.
And had been proven time and again librem.one is UNRELIABLE. If I need something done for my biz, I need it ON TIME and not 3 days later because the librem.one domain has been blocked, marked, or reported by some anti-spam service. Or even something stupid as an unrecognized domain because the other end only recognizes dot com, org, edu, gov or mil.
There are other, more established services that have been around a long time, should you ever want to explore different options. (But your call, of course.)
Most people probably don’t mind, or don’t notice when a business is routing their customers’ mail through gmail. Personally, I do notice… and it makes me uncomfortable with that business. (That’s just lil’ ol’ me, though. )
I recommend KeepassXC (or its variants). Easy peasy. Made my life a lot simpler.
Apologies, all, if I’ve derailed the topic a bit.
Ok. I will try KeepassXC on my UBUNTU laptop, do you have KeepassXC loaded on your Librem5.
fwiw, I am not that reliant on email and I understand you reservations with librem.one. I did have issues with blocked emails but that was when I used ProtonVPN. I needed to stop using ProtonVPN and emails have been ok. Mostly ProtonVPN assigned IP addresses seemingly at random and often entire domains were on blacklists for the ProtonVPN assigned IPs. So far so good with my librem.one emails.
I know Firefox and otheres have VPNs but I have been bit by VPNs and I am wary.
Hmmmmm should I raise new topics? (I also want to post sme photos of my bonelk dock, the photo were sent via an iphone as MMS messages to Librem5)
Another thing is Firefox has the ability to remember passwords.
How does that work with a password manager?
If you run a business then you ought to have your own domain. That domain could then be hosted by anyone, including Google or Microsoft but hopefully someone nicer.
But do you notice if the business has its own domain but the domain is hosted by Google?
I do (sometimes) because I am running my own mail server and this becomes obvious from the logs.
You just need to be sure that you enable the compositor option for KeePassXC in Mobile Settings app (overdriving system settings for resolution), else you wont be happy with.
In Firefox you can use the KeePassXC-Browser addon. Once you logged into KeePassXC the addon can fill out every login data on every website that’s saved into KeePassXC-app. I would highly recommend that addon, especially on Librem 5. But you also could just copy paste everything. Ignore the Firefox build in password manager completely.
And a last hint: don’t enable the option to log out from KeePassXC as soon as you minimize the application. Better just close the app every time you want to log out. I’m using auto-log out on desktop, but on Librem 5 it makes it nearly unusable.
Thanks everyone . I learnt a lot. However my wiki login issue remains unresolved.
So I am going to mark this post as a solution.
Is that the Flatpak install of KeepassXC? My PureOS package install doesn’t appear to work that way.
My biz is too small to justify a paid website or service, it only does 2K a year, no employees. GMAIL is just fine for what I do. So thanks for the arroance and conceit of laughing at me.
I use KeepassXC on Linux Mint. The Secrets
flatpak, which can easily import your KeepassXC password database, works on Librem 5 (although I haven’t used password management much with the L5).
KeepassXC can integrate into your browser - I haven’t done this - or you can simply use it as a stand-alone, i.e. open it to copy a password (or other saved information: credit card numbers, etc.) whenever you need to.
Be sure to back up your password database regularly.
Yes.
No. And I hate it.
I certainly didn’t intend that.
I had a domain before I was doing any business. At less than $100 USD/year, I can certainly justify it now when my income from it exceeds that amount (especially since it’s a deductable expense).
