Use the opportunity of the moment - USA manufactured Librem 5

Hi,

Don’t want to get into politics or opinion of the current US administration. Any of this would be off topic in this thread! From a economic perspective it could be profitable to purism and the Librem 5 products, even maybe a fir version, to use the magic opportunity of the moment.
Why?
The current administration wants phones to be manufactured in the USA. [1]
Iphones however will probably be not manufactured in the USA [2]
The Librem 5 USA is mostly manufactured in the USA and allied states.
This could be a key selling point and help purism to grow without compromising it’s SPC mission to libre, open source - e.g. if purism could get long term high volume government contracts making them a reference customer also providing security reviews, pentests etc.

It’s a good idea, but who has the patient to use a librem5 or care about security and privacy besides a few nerds?

I do.

I do as well. With a few bug fixes and updates, I can see the L5 being in demand from both government and civilian sectors. Just needs a bit more investment, in my opinion.

Well at least you got a head start versus the competition. Now all you have to do is take advantage of your supply chain before you get crowded out. Cement your contracts.

If the iPhone and Android prices dramatically increased due to tariffs, that would make the Liberty phone, already made in the USA, a lot more competitive from a price standpoint.

The mainly USA and western government supply chain might be a really good selling point.

For me, I am so used to the Librem 5 now (over 2 years, and Pinephone before that), going back to the iPhone is actually inconvenient for me! I don’t just prefer the privacy and security. I prefer the experience!

And a higher success rate when making phone calls. Support for messengers and popular streaming services would be fine, too. Maybe even one or two calendar and email apps that actually work. Also, support for public transport providers so I can legally board local trains. And two-factor authentication for bank accounts. And being able to visit web sites without getting locked out because the site assumes I’m a robot.

but people like us represent maybe 0,000001% or less of the population. I wish everybody would want a linux phone, but it takes a of of effort even for linux desktop users.

I would rather focus on appreciating that the Purism community persistently cares to this day rather than persuading the uninterested masses.

I agree, my point is to not set expectations about the masses.

Beware, lest popularity makes the L5 the evil twin.
