The situation with stores wanting to track your buying behavior is horrible, and the worst part is that you only get the sales at Kroger if you accept the Kroger Plus card so they can track your behavior.
This article by Forbes explains why Kroger tracks buying behavior of its customers:
Aitken said much of Kroger’s revenue growth came from understanding individual customers and not relying on demographics. Speaking at the Money2020 conference in Las Vegas, Aitken said “Demographics tell you nothing, yet too many companies are focused on them. Just because I am the same age as you, live next door and have 2.2 children doesn’t mean we have the same preferences.”
So dunnhumby [a data analytics firm] creates a DNA on each customer, rather than cramming customers into segments, to see what drives their behavior – do they have kids, do they skew toward healthy or fun, do they like organic or convenience, and where are they price sensitive – across all products or only on some.
“We tell our retailing customers there is no silver bullet. Take data from customers and look at the decisions the business is making and look at their impact on the consumer.” The company will work with only one company in any category and geography; Kroger is the largest US grocery chain using its data. dunnhumby also works with Raley’s, a regional grocery store chain in California and Nevada which has minimal overlap with Kroger. The customer data specialist also works with Macy’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
The worse part is how hard it is to avoid the data tracking of personal behavior. My parents live in a town of 10,000 people where there is only Kroger, Walmart and ALDI to buy food. Walmart is generally evil, and destroyed most of the local retailers in the town, so my parents refuse to guy groceries there. Kroger tracks their buying, so that only leaves ALDI which only stocks select items. My parents end up buying most of their food at Kroger, and they want the sales so they use the Plus card and Krogers knows exactly what they buy every week.

Your parents should stop using their current grocery chain loyalty number and start over with this:
Or any other fake number that’s easily remembered! (Or just use the chain’s issued key tag after re-signing up.) Also use a fake name and address if asked.
It’s important to also opt out of all data sharing with your credit card issuers (and other payment systems). Incredibly, they might be sharing your purchase history with data aggregators.
I patch and compile all my used open source software by myself. I did not check every patch but have a versioning with git and a history of changes, i look at before compile and use it.
Did you read Wikipedia’s Entry of this Documentary? Its not that i think that its not probably to influence an election or voters with technology. From my viewpoint its just … not up to date. You do not need to use that kind of Data, if you have more Data available on the Market in the US.
And i think its more easy to change there worldview through Twitter, Facebook, Amazon or a popular Video App from China. The Internet and the new Information War don’t have Boarders.
However its not easy to attribute an attacker, from Money an Location. I think the first issue are too much personal Information flow away to a “secret extraction of personal Information”, through Computers like Smartphone from Humans.
But as long as we’re talking about the geo-tracking technology, it seems completely valid to point out here that the technology can be used and is being used, not only to violate your voting privacy, but also to gather evidence of vote rigging.
That geo-tracking is really bad. Have you read about that Apple-Issue with that Phone in the Plane?
Someone lost its Phone in the Plane and it flown over month from here to there. The Owners watch about it on “Track my Phone”. And the Phone was out of Battery but BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) send an ID to other Apple Devices wich Track that Phone, if an Apple Device was near the Plane.
Even if the Device was in flymode. And here we have a passive ability of Tracking. You “other device” will snitch you for your location like Tracking and Maps of WLAN do this with Android and iOS too. Its free Money if a Phone collect and send that Information about nearby Mac-Devices to Apple or Google, and even Amazon or Cars in near future would do so. And i do not see why your Samsung or LG Screen would not have a 3 Cent Chip to collect and send this Data, in Future daily if it flush more Money into those Companies pocket. Its kind a dark future and i hope we will not end up there.
However right now, this is the great hot shit. And you can watch on China where it will lead us to. I am so sad for Society, cause it will destory so much of free speach and believe in technology.
Edit: Sorry i missed my Point. You can buy your last X Month of Geodata allready and in futer the (far future, year 0 to age of 16 for example if you are 18) will be available for free, recent/every minute data will be expansive.

Exactly. A reputable sender will respect your “STOP”. A disreputable sender or an outright criminal will not. Hence it is necessary to be able to verify the number to relate to the sender and then make a judgement about the sender.
Verifying the number is usually difficult.
Yes. Also there is some risk in replying STOP at all if the message is malicious e.g. designed to exploit a Day 0 on your phone or e.g. designed to engage you in a way that might accidentally or ultimately result in a malicious outcome.

Just found out that (non-political) spam texts can be forwarded directly to the FTC at 7726 ( that spells “SPAM”), and they’ll look into who sent it and where it came from. Nice!

I initially said 216, but I missed a few; it’s actually 327. (Corrected now.)
A lot of the fields and entries are cryptic - numerical codes and such. My full name, date of birth, address, mobile number, voter/party status, email address, and geocoordinates of my house were all spot on. Also race, but where it got my ethnicity (it assumes “my people” must be from a specific area of the UK) and religion (I’m an atheist, but that’s not what they think), I have no clue. Income was off by a bit.
I would like to know what all the numerical codes correspond to, such as my score for “consumeraffinitymodel,” “certaintymodel,” “propensitymodel,” etc., as well as the more cryptic category designations (as listed above).

Every Data got sold today. So we have to minimize the available amount of data in the first place.
Kill Sensors or cut them of from the web or ble. Overwrite collected Data with the picture you will paint.
But if some code or A.i. get it… you know. Not lost but your not bff will tell stories about you.

The following may be of interest to U.S. voters, as Primary season is getting underway, annoying poltical campaign flyers are starting to fill mailboxes, and canvassers will start knocking on doors. (They know your name and address.)
One data broker that specializes in collecting and selling voter data is https://politicaldata.com/
There are instructions on their Privacy Policy page for getting your private data removed. I suggest using an alias-email address to send the request.
Campaigns that use this sort of broker allegedly often update the lists they have in order to find out if anyone has already voted and no longer worth trying to persuade, or to capture any new registered voters, so it’s worth opting out now.

The owner of this website has taken it upon himself to obtain and publish (contrary to legally authorized voter roll usage) every U.S. voter’s name, date of birth, address, party affiliation, and status: https://www.voteref.com/
He has already attracted the attention of several Secretaries of State and been subjected to take-down notices, but unfortunately most states’ voter data is still there.
There’s no personal data opt-out that I can find on the site.

There are indications in at least one external news article I saw that they don’t honor opt-out requests, but people can express their displeasure there, I guess. Fortunately, California voters aren’t uploaded to the site.

Data is like that. I can’t comment on the situation in the US but here it is difficult for the government to balance legitimate uses of electoral roll information, that may(?) enhance democracy, with illegitimate uses, that may just help scammers and other criminals, as well as being generic privacy fail. The problem is that once the data is released, you simply can’t control what happens to it. I wonder whether any democracy is doing better with this problem?
Party affiliation is at least not a problem here since that is not collected on a wide-spread or general basis. That said, I’m not sure what “party affiliation” means in your context. Whether the voter is a member of a political party? Whether the voter generally votes for that party? Something else?
Maybe the answer is that electoral roll information ceases to be available “publicly” for any purpose but, with the express consent of any given voter, “the public” can communicate to that voter via the gatekeeper that manages the electoral roll (in much the same way that you can use this forum to email me without knowing my email address).
