Where Does Chat Save Images/Attachments?

As the title asks.
I searched but the search here needs serious intervention.

Just so I can email a pic to myself as attachment, so I can use Tbird to dload it to Windows so I can email it to a friend. GEEZ!

Add to this please, how to know what folder I’m in.I found the pics but I have no idea what folder to get to in order to attach to a webmail - uggg webmail!

Are you talking about the Librem 5?

Yes. When setting the topic, I looked and software was the only one I could find and no sub but I had a feeling I would be asked by someone.

If the L5 takes a picture, it in to Pictures folder. It would make more sense to to have a Chatty folder in pictures. I looked around, which I’m still not good at, and, well, I couldn’t find it.

You’re questioning my Topic made me wonder; does Chatty work on the laptops too? If so, do the laptops have a different location to save images as well?

I see there is a May CrimsonOS report. Off to read that…

I think maybe some clarification is needed.

1_ Are you trying to save an image (or file) that you received in Chats, so that you can then attach it to an email?

2_ Are you referring to a photo that you made with the camera app, and that you want to attach to an email?

You can do this by creating a new folder, for example, inside the Pictures folder, or inside your home folder. Then when you save an image, put it there if you want.

That said, I’m not using the Librem 5 with a mobile telephone number, and haven’t set up MMS in Chats, so I have no idea if it’s easy to save a received image from that app. Normally, one would expect a long-press on the image would invoke a “Save as” menu option, but I don’t know if it works that way in Chats. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Once you do have the image saved somewhere, open up your email app, start a new email, and use the menu to attach the image for sending.

If you click on the image in Chats it will open in eog (Image Viewer), you can then click Save As in the Hamburger Menu

For anyone else that reads this, saving pics that way is OK. for one or 2 pics but if one has a dozen pics, it’s the hard way of doing it.

If you go to the image properties it will tell you where it saves them, then you can link it to your Pictures folder

Ever amarok doesn’t know, ahahahaha. That is funny. I have been having trouble on and off finding where pictures download to if I download starry night wallpaper and so on, it goes to some, maybe not random but oddly named spot with numbers and letters instead of the dl folder. Can I force it to go to the dl folder if it is a jpg or img file?

Downloading from the internet? Are you saying that the following download preferences in GNOME Web and Firefox don’t work correctly for you?

To answer the question posed in the OP title:

/home/purism/.local/share/chatty/mms/

That is, they’re automatically added there after they arrive in Chatty, but unfortunately a separate folder is generated for each new incoming and outgoing MMS, which precludes selecting them all in bulk for copying to elsewhere.

As @ASwyD2 pointed out, if you click on an image from within Chatty, it’s then opened in Image Viewer aka Eye of Gnome (eog). From there you can save the image to the desired directory, e.g. Pictures (or a special “MMS Pics” folder, but you have to add a file type (.jpg, .png, etc.) to the name in order to save it. It’s still only one-at-a-time, unfortunately, but at least you’ll be able to select and copy them all at once after you’ve saved them all to the same directory.

It would be useful if Chatty had either a select-all control, or if there were some way to use the keyboard commands Ctrl-a/c/v, or Ctrl-then select images one by one. It’s not possible right now, though. Or failing that, an option to set the save location Chatty’s preferences.

I imagine it would be possible to write an on-demand script, with “desktop” launcher, that:

  • seeks and copies all the individual image files from the folders in /home/purism/.local/share/chatty/mms/

  • adds a .png file extension to each one, and

  • pastes them all to a designated folder

(Until Chatty gets enhanced.)

At least Chatty seems to be consistent across platforms with its file structure for attached images. Migrating messaging history with attachments intact was relatively painless from OG Pinephone with pmos/phosh to the Librem 5. No futzing around with SQLite or MySQL etc. Just a few scp’s and a restart . . .

Kudos to @amarok for posting it. Credit for the “Workarounds” goes to and @irvinewade.
It covers more than just where things are stored.
