Oh to answer your other question, if you want to run nightly, it’s better to use Mobian. It may also work on older Debian versions (better said on PureOS), but I cannot give any proof and would not do it myself. With Dawn the most important changes are included anyway.

You could try to use (very carefully) the unofficial backports where phosh 0.50 is already available. Please do not forget to make a backup first.
