I second the Librem TV, especially if it has an equivalent to AirPlay.
Also, a Librem speaker wouldn’t be bad. Had a HomePod for a short time, and while I liked it for a semi-portable sound system, I hated the fact that such powerful microphones were connected to a remote server. Hi-Fi sound with a digital assistant that does all processing on-device, which can be done with a mobile processor (both my iPhone and MacBook have offline dictation using the Siri engine, yet Siri itself requires a connection). So for example, you ask the speaker for the current weather. It translates your speech to text on-device, generates a query from that, and THEN it goes out to the internet and fetches the requested data. The voice data never leaves the device and ideally isn’t stored, either. As for music played on the speaker, have the speaker take a MicroSD card and have it appear as a network drive, which one could then keep synced with software on a computer. The SD card contains a copy of your music library so that it can play anything you have by voice command, and for anything else, use a Bluetooth connection to another device.
Sigh it is EOMA68 - embedded open modular architecture, 68 pins. You can read any of the 70+ updates or join the mailing list and follow why it has taken so long, even ask a question rather than jump to the conclusion that, as a Software Libre Developer of 25 years experience, and ethical technology specialist it is my sole exclusive desire in the world to “scam” people, eagle.
Also, you will note the word “modular” in EOMA68. That means “modular”, as in “the computer card is replaceable with an upgrade”. Samsung’s latest smartphones are soon to have 16 core processors and 12GB of RAM! Such processors are perfectly well capable of fitting into an EOMA68 form factor.
So please do take a bit more care in what you write, keep an open mind and ask questions ok? Thanks eagle.
Forgot to mention it before, I’d like to see a Kindle-like device for reading (e-ink display, backlight). I love my Kindle, but hate where it came from.
a usb-c 3g/4g/5g antenna, small and portable that can sit on the back of the phone, when connected without making the phone like a brick.
To get some signal gain, when on the road, in the forest or off shore
a desktop free that have a price max of 600 € whit normal atx (no mini no micro). it does not need to have 25 latest generation USB3 ports or 3 display ports. Need a free desktop computer.
If we speak about this kind of issues, my (much more realistic, but still improbable) wish is to have a DE written in Rust. This would both make this DE much more maintainable than existing ones and promote Rust as a language.
I’d like to see something similar, but significantly different. Kodi, sure, but I’d really like to see something like a podcatcher, but that works with commercial TV services. I’m currently using Antenna Pod on my old Galaxy S3 and it will grab your run-of-the-mill RSS feed, but also allows you to authenticate a paid service. I’d really like something like that, but also works with Prime, HBO Go, Netflix, Hulu, etc.
There must be something stronger than tobacco in my pipe… I’m dreaming.
No problem, eagle, sorry for taking so long to reply. It’s hard to know whom to trust, there have been some extremely well funded scams perpetrated through crowdfunding.
About the Libre RISCV SoC, the specs were set at very low for the first version very deliberately, so that the cost (NREs - non recurring expenses) is far lower. A hundred million dollars is the normal amount spent by NVIDIA, AMD or Intel to do a full custom ASIC.
By picking a lower target, where the maximum GPIO speed is below 150mhz, that is achievable in 180nm for only around USD 10k, and 45nm is around USD 100k. This is pocket change when it comes to ASIC production.
WHEN we have an ASIC proven design then we have the confidence to go to 28nm or below, and so would VCs and backers.
At that point we can consider 3ghz 16 core designs with the performance of an AMD or Intel mainstream processor.
I hope to see your risc v vga to succed asap, i mean should be awesome to have even a low power gpu completly open from hw to firmware to run at 1080p @60hz with basic 3d accelleration (for run DE like kde, gnome, videos from the web and from vlc i.e. i don’t really care about gaming), for privacy conciuos users this gpu paired with an openpower system like blackbird or o hope a future purism product like this, to run an entire pc without blobs, or at least the last component with closed firmware will be the ssd, i hope someone will care about it too.
Do you have any kind of roadmap about the risc gpu?
It is a hybrid CPU VPU GPU, all three in the same instruction set. So it will run as the main processor. Of course there is nothing to stop it being turned into a PCIe Graphics Card, either, but that is not the first intended market.
GPUs are only done as separate ISAs so they can sell to different markets (on PCIe cards). The engineers hate it, because the driver software has to have an embedded RPC mechanism to get the function parameters over to the GPU!
As things stand, we are probably looking at… 12 to 18 months to a test chip. Of course, if there was extra assistance or sponsorship (which because it is being managed by NLNet is charitable donations and thus tax deductible) things would go much faster.
One nice thing, the newly formed Open 3D Graphics Alliance had its first meeting at WD’s Milpitas Office, and it went extremely well. Lots of great feedback, which basically told me I called this one early (I do that a lot )
I’d like the Librem 11 to be brought back to life, and for work to continue on it. Convergence devices are important and I think the tablet computer is that market space.
I disagree however about it being ARM based. We need the device to be as compatible with software as it can be. Targeting the ARM platform means that only specialized Linux distros will have stuff for it. If we keep it x86/64 then we have a humongously massive catalog of software across Linux and Windows and even OS X if you wanna run a Hackintosh.
Remember, it being a FOSS products doesn’t mean that arbitrary limitations are put on its use. I need it to be able to run anything, and I believe that will be it’s real appeal.
For me, a Surface like tablet, with a battery that can be replaced and by design, is a tablet that will appeal to MANY people way outside of the current enraptured audience Purism currently courts.
