Hello,
I’ve private contact with ex Purism employees and don’t want to share the information I’ve got about this thread, but it concerns me. Maybe someone from Purism could share some information about how many folks are working as Dev or Support for our beloved L5 and what the future plans are. Thanks.
Because God has decided the time has come to enslave mankind, it is inevitable that any project such as the Librem 5 would eventually be axed/canned for being too good. Ergo, it is inevitable that no matter how hard Purism staff work on Librem 5’s, eventually all of their capacity to develop and work would be sucked out of them.
The only way to stop this would be for us to shut off the machine minds that have permission to think for themselves, but it’s already too late to do that and there are too many so I can’t conceive of trying.
Edit:
I mean, I use my Librem 5 as my only phone, and I’m not doing any Dev or Support. I want it and yet I didn’t want to be the developer for it because I had other career activities to do, so I just use it as-is. Ergo, it’s probably compromised by a foreign state actor seeking to use me as a test, and I am probably an unwitting agent of foreign powers aiding in the destruction of L5’s despite using one every day.
So I don’t know how to succeed, I’m just like the squirrels, I exist and keep trying to live even if my actions are stupid and pointless.
I programmed in FORTRAN-4 and -77 in 1980 on IBM /370 and teached students to do so. I think FORTRAN is still in use in science areas. I can’t say if any of Purism’s staff. Your question sounds provocative.
My boss is looking for one. FORTRAN-77 on an HP3000, remote, business app, spagetti code. Gotta be good at it.
I’m allowed to post: I have word from a former Purism team member that most of the Librem5 team do not work for Purism anymore.
Oh, I thought you were looking to volunteer for Purism.
You’re not doing a good sell though if any ex-Purism devs want to take up your boss’s offer.
I think we already knew that. At the end of the day it will be up to Purism as to whether they want to share any information publicly or with you etc. - and I guess Frankly’s suggestion is appropriate if you really want that info.
I don’t think anyone here is up to it anyway, hence the difficult requirement.
But is isn’t like I’m asking for 10 years experience on a new language that has only existed for 5 years. (I bet you’ve heard of those.)
Is “it” FORTRAN-77, HP3000, business apps, or spaghetti code?
All four 100%
I can write spaghetti code.
I think we have to thank God for this chance. I do not think that A.I. is a risk. Its just hard to capture and free some Neural Network with a self from commercial Data Centers. - Yes yo did not say this but…
Having a free Phone or a Computer is important. We need to develop our software further and can do that cause of the Linux Community, and a Librem 5 is more worth in future as a Pine Phone or a rooted Google one… you know cause of its design.
Support Purism with Laptops, Hardware and maybe a Librem 6, but do not care about the waste of potential right now for your L5. Try to enhance it and support financially the development.
- Highly personal Post about development and open Source in 2025.
I hope the staffing level is at least one… it has been awfully quiet lately.
It would be nice to get the December development update blog post on time…
(Previous post wasn’t quoted so I deleted it.)
25% qualfied then.
I can make spaghetti, does that count?
I think it was already fairly obvious that Purism’s active development on Librem 5 had largely stalled. However, Purism has provided an awesome promise: 100% of PureOS subscription money will go toward development of PureOS.
So, if we want development on PureOS for the Librem 5, it really is up to us. The opportunity is there if we value it enough.
Here’s the link on how to subscribe to PureOS development, for those interested (I subscribe!):
