Alternatives to software and services of the big corps

We’ve had various threads about alternative software and services over the years. Usually the point has been to find alternative to big corp - mostly due to their surveillance or their over-commercialized data brokerage schemes. Open and libre type alternatives are preferred (at least by most in this community). Or just something that works on linux (never mind on aarch64, or as self-hosted / offline). As it happens, most of the big corps are US based (not all, mind you - some big Chinese dataslurpers come to mind - and not all US based are necessarily bad) and due to recent events it seems a site has been created that happens to kinda almost serve the alternative finding endeavors: European alternatives for popular services | European Alternatives

It lists plenty of alternatives to software and services, from infrastructure to everyday apps. As a sideproduct, it’s an interesting view into some of the most used stuff and what can (and probably should) be avoided - and how to do that. As one article put it, it may not be possible to avoid all of them all the time but every little bit helps.

At the moment the content is mostly for Android/iOS/Windows - for more the general public - but that could be changed as there are a few open & self-hosted alternatives listed too. In fact, the site takes recommendations, which is where anyone can suggest even better alternatives. Although the spark to create such list and site may be politically inclined, the list can be used from our perspective as well. Or you can point to it if you want to educate family and friends who aren’t (yet) linux users.

As a side note, there are plenty of “alternative to” sites out there. Have you found a good one you’d suggest?

[For conversations about political side of this, please set up a separate thread at the Round Table area]

I hope the YouTube alternatives (at least) gain some universal traction. I’m tired of people endlessly sending me (Google-snoop)Tube links. I ignore and delete them anyway, especially since I don’t know what they link to, and I’m sure they incorporate tracking in some form
