AweSIM quality and reliablity

Still finding my way to switching over to Librem 5 and AweSIM.

Several AweSIM questions:

  • I read in previous 2024 posts about service interuption, data breaching, etc. For those of you that use AweSIM, have things improved?
  • I also don’t see in the online Purism information that it prevents SIM card swap protection. Anyone know about that?
  • Can I purchase the AweSIM and port my number AFTER I play around with the Librem 5 onlline?

Please LMK your experience. TIA

Definitely!!

I use AweSIM and haven’t had any problems since the 2024 service switch. On my Librem 5 with AweSIM I have better service than my other family members with AT&T and duop phones

I should look into this as well depending on what you are asking here.

I have used a Librem 5 as my (only!) daily driver phone for years at this point but have used other providers and not AweSIM. Might be fun for me to buy the service to support Purism prior to being confident in it enough to move my US number over.

If you try that, please consider posting your experience with it if your security model allows. Thanks!

I am not aware of any Librem AweSIM service outage since this thread. Librem AweSIM was unaffected by the AT&T data breaches and we have received no reports otherwise.

SIM swap protection is enabled for all AweSIM subscribers. A SIM lock feature is also available on the Librem 5.

The Librem 5 is a fully-functioning computer in the shape of a smartphone, so you can tinker with the device as much as you want. The WWAN and WLAN modules are socketed, so they can be completely removed or replaced if desired, without affecting other system functionality. You just won’t have access to those specific network interfaces without them.

This question is difficult to parse. So you may get different answers.

  1. AweSIM and the Librem 5 are two independent products. You can use AweSIM with phones other than the Librem 5. You can use the Librem 5 with whatever SIM you can lay your hands on (subject to any restrictions that the mobile service associated with the SIM imposes). You can get a Librem 5 and try it out with no SIM or your existing SIM or a new SIM that is not via AweSIM until you decide to get AweSIM later on. (Obviously no SIM implies no cellular network and hence WiFi only.)
  2. If the question is: Can I purchase an AweSIM service now getting a new number and then port my existing number later on? … then the logistics of that may be tricky and you should discuss that directly with Purism. However I would imagine that, worst case, you could always cancel your existing AweSIM service when you are ready to port and get a new AweSIM service where you do port your existing number. I’m sure Purism would want to accommodate whatever number dance you want to do.

When I used the service, I found it to work very well with outstanding uptime, etc.

I can’t use my current Efani SIM; already checked w/ customer support. I think I’m going to play around with the computer function then port my number over.
