Battery discharges even when turned off

Hello,

My relatively new L5’s battery discharges even when the phone is fully turned off. Within a 2 day period it will go from 100% charged to 0% charged, even when off the entire time.

I have no idea how that’s possible. Doesn’t seem like something a software update will ever fix. Is my phone or battery to blame? And what can be done to remedy the situation?

Thank you!

The discharge should be very slow when turned off, no more than about 1% per day.

It’s been a little while since I expressly tested this but I’m fairly certain my L5 does not do this.

In my head it seems more likely a short in the device would cause this than a short in a battery, but that’s a guess as a layman. It might be cheaper to buy a spare battery and use it to find out. But if the spare battery confirms the problem is the phone, then what?

Have you tried disabling HKS when the device is powered off, in case the less “free” parts are related to the issue?

Did you check your syslogs to ensure that when you thought the device was off, that it was really off - and not stuck waiting on some process to close that busted?

Hold the power button for 10 seconds.

I seem to remember that if you have the phone plugged in and then turn it off and unplug it, it is not fully off because it is still in charging mode

I get this problem, but only when my phone is not actually turned off, which actually happens quite often. Often times my wifi and or modem will lock up, and “shutting down” the device will not actually power it down fully. The screen show the powering down logo, then go dark, but the phone is not really off. I can verify that the phone is still on because I need to hold the power button for ~5 seconds (to really turn it off) before holding it down for another ~2 seconds to power it back on. This could easily cause the issue you describe.

I’ll have to go over the suggestions here, because I also experience this – I’ve worked around it by just removing the battery after shutdown, especially if (unfortunately too common a case) I don’t use the L5 for weeks-long stretches.

This appears to be the correct answer. The other night I turned off the phone while it was being charged. Once it was fully charged and the red light went off, I unplugged it. I then turned it back on the next day and it had lost considerable percentage. I can’t remember how much. Then last night I fully charged it while leaving it on. Once fully charged I disconnected the power cord and then turned it off. This morning it had only lost 2% of it’s charge.

Turning off the hardware kill switches did nothing to slow or speed up the battery loss. Also, I never hold down the off button for 10 seconds to turn it off. I always turn it off through the software power off button. Also, when I turn it back on it always boots normally and takes me to the boot encryption screen. So, I’m confident I was turning it off fully.

Thanks for all of the help, everybody, and especially the solution, i.e. disconnect the charger before turning it off.

Probably related is that plugging in an “off” Librem 5 causes it to turn on, whether you want it to or not.

With my L5, I have to then power down to get charging to start. Otherwise, it won’t charge. After that, I can power on if I want, and charging continues.

That’s actually how you can say that the phone was in the shipping mode (aka “completely off”) - it wouldn’t turn on when plugging USB-C if it wasn’t. Another way to tell is how long it took for the green LED to shine after pressing the power button (it takes a bit longer in shipping mode).

Pretty sure something’s damaged there, either TPS65982 (more likely) or BQ25895.

What are those?
The second one is the internal charger, right?
