Milk-V was already mentioned by @carlosgonz earlier.
I guess you could say one of my pert computers was free because I built it from parts of other peoples discarded desktops. I started with a old Dell MoBo and went from there.
Other than my time, itâs my free computer. All other cost me way too much. Proprietor parts - yeah, a headache.

Guys i like so much GNU-RYF Thinkpad X-60, i use it almost as daily driver. Also i like so much Power9, however i use Power9 for Super Heavy Task.
Some day i was Windows and Linux user, however both Windows and Linux dont full satisfy me in terms of control and freedom and more, until i finally met Gnu, and i feel at home, happy and safe with the Gnu system.
I want to Thank to: RMS, infinitely for everythingâŚ
Why is the Lenovo ThinkPad X-60 not the main daily driver yet?
x-60 lacks new technologies, like GLES3.0, Vulkan, OLED, CPUs horsepower for compile.
Theoretically the superbeloved x230 can run on Gnuboot now. I am on testingâŚ
Edit:
NO KINGS.
No. Gnuboot cant be on x230. ![]()
Also i finally tried today xe.guc=0 on powepc(raptor) and do not worked
open source driver XE it claiming for Blobs even when the controller(Intel arc) support GL without blobs.
Xe it the only supported for ppc as i915 never worked.
Now i not sure how i may be Libre from Blobs on PPC to get OpenGL3.+.
Nouveou is it a option on old controllers but nouveou do not support 65k page size , which DebĂan base it using for ppc on some packages like mesa.
A much bigger problem than installing Gnuboot on the X230 is that the GnuBoot wiki https://www.gnu.org/software/gnuboot/web/ has had NO instructions on how to build a D-16 desktop for two years now. Itâs a mystery to me, is it really that difficult? And then the developers wonder why everyone uses Windows))
Today I have tried the 6.15.6 gnu libre kernel on some of my pcâs and unfortunately all failed, one has two amd cards (radeon)
05:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Caicos [Radeon HD 6450/7450/8450 / R5 230 OEM] [1002:6779]
06:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cedar [Radeon HD 5000/6000/7350/8350 Series] [1002:68f9]
for both card the firmware is proprietary (sic!) and so donât start (black screen
but pc is working using ssh)
Another pc has nvidia gt710 and the Desktop start, but give me messages about failed firmware loading and no 3d.
My question is: did exist anywhere an nvidia or Ati/amd card with non-proprietary firmware AND passive cooling? I really hate noise, is not important if card/gpu is less powerful than others, i use it for sd movies and some flightgear playing.
Thanks
This is necessary. A configuration which must be pretend to be safe must not run any proprietary stuff (blob, firmware, etc..), is the same concept of free software, is public available and none can put backdoors (in sources at least) or spyware. Running an opensource OS like Linux or BSD* but using proprietary firmware is not sufficient for 100% (or at least 90%) really secure system. A very great dream would be in my opinion
° Opensource bios (gnu firmware if possible, libreboot or coreboot as alternative)
° Gnu libre kernel (to avoid proprietary firmware loaded)
° A gnu os (Slackware, Debian..of course with os software)
Passive cooling (is not necessary for security, is only because I really dislike noise)
Guys first super-thanks for being GNU Users
. We need more gnu peoples like you here at Purism forum, as there are too much Linux users here.
This gpu do not use Propietary-Linux blobs. I guess it need new config on xorg.
This GPUs arch need a active fans to work. So if you want to bypass gpu fans go to use a gpu built-in into CPU.
I tried several back then on the KGPE-D16 but had frequent freezes, sometimes also in the browser which might have been using 3D then though. This matrix might help:
The latest I had was a GT218 (nvs300) from the NV50 family with passive cooling. Apart from the freezes it was working well and blob-free.
Are you sure? dmesg give me message about failed firmware loading (as I know the libre kernel donât allow firmware loading if proprietary) and kodi screen is out of sync/diffrerent resolution than with standard kernel.
Not entirely as I am not running linux-libre and there are some files in /lib/firmware/nvidia. If you tell me how I can check which firmware was loaded Iâll be happy to look into it.
An interesting new option for a classic desktop might be the Dell Optiplex 5040 with this port:
However, it needs the FSP-blob and has old DDR3L RAM which is a disadvantage compared to the Dell 3050. Unless you want to make use of the PCIe extension slots itâs probably not that attractive.
Weird. What OS version it is?
Slackware 15.0 with noveau driver standard from distro and libre kernel 6.15.6
the desktop start but as I understand without 3d because firmware loading failed.
Next days when I return to my city probably i will found the error message in the logs and I will post it, or I can also run the system with libre kernel and put the error messages.
Meanwhile an interesting discussion here
https://www.reddit.com/r/GUIX/comments/mv89af/radeon_and_nvidia_on_linux_libre/
Despite the AMDGPU driver being called open source it still contains binary blobs and so is not considered free software.
Completely agree.
Is possible to get somewhere (if exist I hope), a list of gpu with proprietary and free firmwares?
Meanwhile another thing to consider. Avoid the amd modern cpuâs
Intel has something similar (Intel IME or ME very insecure imho) but with coreboot/libreboot and gnu bios is possible to disable it, for PSP very few bios allow to disable it.
Slackware is not Gnu but BSD Like, however i respect a lot Slackware. If Gnu dead, i will get refuge in Slackware before falling back on Windows-or-Ubuntu-ArchLinux-LinuxMint and most super-evil FEDORA. Many people use Fedora without knowing how bad Fedora is. Stay away from Fedora. Fedora is a Gnu Killer. Please keep away ![]()
Interesting i will investigate what going on.
OpenSource is not FreeSoftware. OpenSource contains DRM and BLOBs like most of the time, just using a humble name as a honeypot.
