On the FuriLabs website is a blog about the Librem 5.
I do not support the conclusion. I prefer to spent some money on a PureOS subscription to support PureOS for the Librem 5.
I’m curious to what you think about the blog.

They first need to get away from github before I start reading their blog posts.
The post has fair praise and criticism, but the implied conclusion (FLX1s will be better) doesn’t follow. Making a Linux phone is much more difficult than building an Android phone due to the state of the Linux ecosystem on mobile, and FuriLabs creating their own distro for this seems like a mistake when they could just contribute to Mobian or PostmarketOS. Purism has spent years of development time on PureOS and it’s just now getting decent on mobile. I wish the FuriLabs project luck, but until they prove they can deliver a working, open Linux device, I will watch from the sidelines.
Agreed.
A lot of companies have tried making non-Android phones, but Purism did eventually deliver.
If FuriLabs ever delivers they may get more of my attention but until then, I have something that works for me already.
The FuriLabs FLX1 phone has been shipped to customers and I saw it at FOSDEM last year. They will be attending again so if you’re traveling or will be in the area, you could check them out as FOSDEM attendance is free (of charge) and doesn’t require registration. It’s not the most freedom-respecting Linux phone out there but it was certainly more powerful and apps ran a lot smoother and faster on it compared to the Librem 5. I still daily-drive my Librem 5 and I’m still waiting for a significant upgrade to the phone hardware out there for me to consider changing it.
The battery life on their phone is significantly better than the Librem 5, however, when I spoke with them, they mentioned that their phone is using proprietary blobs to gain those optimizations. My impression of them is that they are more focused on general usability over the philosophy of Free Software, like what Purism is doing.
Yeah super-butter thanks to opensource linux blobs on flx1 like android. ![]()
I think that FLX1 still using a old HAL
I am not any privacy or degoogle user that happened to have librem and liberty phones. I am just bores on android and really like unique phones. I have Flx1s as well, I have to say, the user experience is way better than my liberty phone. phosh is buttery smooth, every app launches as quick as if not faster than ios and android apps and 5g support, android is better intergrated like sailfishos does(I know core people here dont use waydroid), liberty phone will need an extra upgrade to have the 5g modem now and future(from purism). However, Furilabs is greety, they lock their convergence mode to their own prepriatory hub and displaylink app to enable it which hasnt released yet. This is why I still having my liberty phone, I dont know why a foss aimed phone wants to have a private hub while almost all linux mobile os allow us to have DP Alt mode on the usb. Liberty phone struggled the same performance maybe abit better than librem5,
Wow you own a L5 Liberty.
I confident that L5 on Gnu Dawn will super-supa butter… you will super surprised.
As far i know 5G is not working on FLX1
It does. I am on US mobile light speed network, I have 5g. Mint doesn’t have, Tmobile has as well. But either way, so far I take liberty phone with convergence, smart card, modem and wifi card swapping feature over a Flx1s phone alone. Flx1s so far is just a pure Linux phone with no features.
Ha, a librem5 USA(4gb rem) and a liberty phone that I just got last month, it has 15% off I think, so I got one.
It is voLTE over 5G not 5G voNR as far i know.
100%
Yes i know 15% off
Oh, I meant that it can receive the 5g data so far. call is still on the VoLTE; however, since they can receive the 5g, 5g VoNR shouldn’t be too far. However, do you also mean that the alternative sim8202g modem not only gives us the 5g data but also the VoNR?
Yes, 8202g specs also list VoNR. I haven’t found anywhere info or app to see which networks use what combinations of features - be on the lookout if you do.
Back on topic: I’ve been curious about why Purism is so quiet on all the social media about L5. None of the Mastodon hashtags have raised any of their posts - only a few enthusiast keep L5 in conversation while other manufacturers keep theirs visible (with good reasons and information, not AI fluff). Even the Linmob weekly rundown seems like Purism is in hiding (at least compared how much is happening with others).
I would like to test this module on gnu dawn, however as far i know 5G it need a discrete antenna for 5g vo.n.r.
Gnu Dawn is a dream, a dream that is hands on dos, however i will not push dos as dos live on a undopamine country, which decrease power. California, Nuevo Mexico, Texas, Monterrey should ok for dos to enable real-power coding.
Jolla is enabling voNR calls, but i not sure if will compat to Flx1s, as it will need android 14up HAL.
8202g is designed to operate with only two antennas and 5G has worked with the L5 standard antennas just fine (who knows if it could work better [with some odd special antennas, that aren’t available for L5], but at least it works ok as is). Specs or hardware manual do not make any point about VoNR special antenna needs.
I would like to know that too. I hope Purism is still gaining profit and planning something big.
5G depend on new material antenna and desing as far i know, however i not sure 5G quality on L5 current antenna, i just saying…
I will keeping to say that open-source is a real killer for free-software which may Purism unpower.
For years open-source is putting user to infinite loop, so user cannot escape and to keep them enslaved indefinitely, this behavior is not good for a real better life computer..
You are probably thinking about 5G that uses some of those special frequencies, but 5G works on other bands too and uses several (depending on the network and how it’s constructed).
Yes
I would like you be the best 5G knowledged user for L5, as i not have time to troubleshooting anything on modem.
Right now my whole mind is for Libre Debian PowerPC.
