Bluetooth Handsfree Audio

Just wondering what the current state of affairs is with BT HFA? This along with the issues with USB and the half crashing are really the big ones for me that are hampering me from using my phone exclusively without my backup phone.

Do we know where that stands?

I not sure if WPAN HFP it is supported on Librem 5 Hardware either in Modules Redpine or SpakLAN.
HFP it very tricky but Purism has all capabilities to enable.

Are you saying the cards don’t support it or the phone itself?

Just bumping this thread to see if there are any new developments with HFA as that would really be nice to have for calls.

@JCS Just wondering if BTHF is on the horizon for the Librem 5? It would really help to make it a daily driver for me.

Bumping this thread. Would just like to know if BTHFA is going to even be possible? Or is it simply not going to happen on this platform?

Can you explain what you mean by “Hands Free Audio”?

Bluetooth headsets work reliably for audio output for me, I have tried 3-4 different headsets.
I have not personally found one that works for audio input, but I know I have seen others in these forums mention that it works for them.

The L5 does not do handsfree audio for phone calls. You can do BTA which is streaming audio from the phone but not during a phone call.

I assume a reference to Hands-Free Profile (HFP) List of Bluetooth profiles - Wikipedia

There is much more to it than just audio out.

And this is different from the Headset Profile (HSP) List of Bluetooth profiles - Wikipedia

And this is different from Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), which I believe does work.

My BT headset works during the call too with one issue - I have to switch the audio profile from A2DP to HSP by myself using “Settings”. I believe it will be solved in the future.

Really? That is news to me.

There was a merge request in pulseaudio that got abandoned by the developer, because pipewire had picked up support. Crimson was supposed to move to pipewire., but some issues is holding it back. I think someone picking up the original pulseaudio merge request might be the fastest path for the Librem 5 right now.

Bluetooth improvements would be a huge quality-of-life upgrade for me as well. I would have to ping the dev team for specifics, but I can generally say that we expect significant improvements with the release of crimson and additional/intentional effort to improve Bluetooth quality affecting current and future Librem 5 models.

Thanks @JCS looking forward to the first formal release of crimson. Any idea of a WAG(wild ass guess) as to when that might be?

I have to note that I use backports, so I have no idea about how it works with original Byzantium repo…
