California goes after 3D printers (AB 2047)

Privacy, schmivacy… now THEY ARE COMING FOR MY SLICER! They can have it… when they pry it from my cold, bloody hands!

So is this “state-certified algorithm” going to be publicly available as source code?

One generic problem is that I will generally not allow printers access to the internet, which means that no updated database of all possible gun designs will become available to the printer, particularly after the printer is out of warranty.

I have no real need for printing from the internet, so giving printers access to the internet is all security and privacy and other risk for no benefit.

However this is only considering the possibility that the enforcement is 100% inside the printer.

Will the bill be retrospective? Or should you be rushing out and buying up 3D printers that you can use with open source software before it’s too late?

And how does this square with the idea that there is an army of civilians in Europe using 3D printing to print parts for Ukraine? I mean obviously in this case the parts are intended for lethal uses but you can argue that it is neverthless a justified and desirable situation. Will printer manufacturers need to have one dodgy firmware version for California and one clean firmware version for the EU?

It is California – there is no “square with”… only stupidity.
