Can I use a L5 USA model in Europe?
Yes. You just have to select the Europe modem when ordering. The “USA” in “Librem 5 USA” only refers to where it was assembled, not its network capabilities.
The modem you want is BM818-E1.
However, if you want to use your L5 in other regions of the world, you’ll have to own multiple modems corresponding to those regions, i.e. North America (BM818-A1) or Asia/Pacific (BM818-T1). The modems are swappable, but they’re not meant to survive more than about 10 swaps…and apparently it’s very, very easy to break the connector ribbons when doing so, which ruins the modem.
Thanks for replying.
Do you know if it’s possible to upgrade my old order from 2021 to the L5 USA model and if I can how to do?
You’ll probably need to email support@puri.sm for that. They might want your original order number, which you should have received by email way back when, and which you can also retrieve by signing into the account you created at puri.sm when you ordered.
I see you’re new to the forum (welcome!), so I don’t know how much you’ve read here, but might be worth checking out the Librem 5 category threads to get a realistic idea of the current state of the software, which improves constantly. (It’s not perfect yet.)
By the way, your original phone order may even ship soon, according to Purism’s projections, i.e. by summer. It’s not certain, though. But if you would rather wait and save money…
I read it will be ship late 2023 I will try to email support how much I must pay to upgrade. Thanks
