chatty not receiving any texts. sending works.

i havent gotten any texts since last friday so in the last 3 days. i have low service at work but when i go outside i can get signal and recieve texts buti figured no one texted. but i sent texts out. today being back in great service found out someone did reply to a text and others i prob dont know.

then today it continued girlfriend called me asking if i got her text to come over. i had not. i asked my mom to send me texts nothing.

there was updates i hadnt gotten im on a metered internet so their not automatic chatty was one of the updates. but still not working. if phone cant reliably get texts or it bugggy with texts and stops working or even if its user error, this would be a deal breaker for trying to use it as main phone.

Not sure why, but receiving texts can be buggy with some carriers. Try turning your cellular kill switch off and on every few days. Hopefully this gets fixed eventually.

If you used to use an iPhone or Android you should check that iMessage/RCS are disabled for your number, or you may not receive those messages from users who use those services.

To disable RCS (Android): https://messages.google.com/disable-chat

To disable RCS (Apple): go to Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging on your iOS device

To disable iMessage: Deregister and Turn Off iMessage - Apple Support

its people ive texted with for the past month. the sim and number are brand new to the phone. not previously with android or i phone… well idk about number but sim is new. i frequently turn kill switch on. like if im at work and dont get service anyway to save battery life.

calling receiving calls, internet, sending texts work but not receiving texts.

someone in forums taught me how to do this but idk what it means. does this mean i have a bunch of stuck messages? it says theres no data in one. but yea i ask people to send me texts and i dont get them. i need this to work as a phone lol.

Yes, those are stuck texts. Not sure how to fix that or what causes it, maybe someone else has an idea? I know how to delete them via CLI but I assume you want to receive them.

Try temporarily changing network to 2G only and see if that allows them through.

By the way, if you keep the network set to “4G only,” you might find it’s better to leave the modem on “2G, 3G, 4G (Preferred).”

It’s only conjecture on my part, but I know that there are still some “rogue” 2G connections out there, and maybe the BM818 looks for them under certain conditions. Maybe?

Try these steps: https://docs.puri.sm/Hardware/Librem_5/Troubleshooting/Messages.html#sms-messages-are-not-received

Does deleting the stuck messages cause them to be lost to the user?

I have been using my Librem 5 for about 3 years but the way I would handle it was having a web UI that had a backup second copy of the texts separate from the device itself. A few months ago my service provider deleted the website and the history of my texts, because they are evil. They run an LLM service and I spoke to the LLM and it agreed that this company is itself evil.

But now with that gone, I fall back on exactly what people said about. sudo mmcli -m any --messaging-list-status and then everything that says receiving I put in sudo mmcli -m any --messaging-delete-sms=11 or whatever where 11 is the number of the stuck receiving text.

Does it actually delete that text so you never receive it?

I don’t know. SMS is a terrible protocol. I believe there were times my device re-pulled in that same text from the nether. I believe there were other times the Librem 5 disappeared texts into the abyss.

Recently I realized that I was mostly only using SMS to communicate with 1 person, so while I was traveling and my SMS poblems got worse and worse, I went and asked an LLM to build me:

  • a server for an end-to-end encrypted messaging with some encryption protocol of our own choice or design
  • a duopoly “app” for the other person I was communicating with that they could sideload
  • a GTK python script that I could put on the home screen of the librem 5

Now I have solved the texting problem with a protocol invented by a digital mind, an alien that humans say they created capable of writing a chat protocol, and it’s either end to end encrypted or a good enough hoax that I don’t care. Because just like the back-and-forth messaging that I used to do in cheap $5 video games from the discount bin at the hardware store in the year 2006 this one actually works, and so if someone messages me I’m going to get their message. Wow.

The problem here I think isn’t Purism. It’s SMS. Evolve, adapt, and don’t choose Whatsapp because that’s Mark Zuckerberg in disguise and it’ll ban you on Librem 5 and then their tech support will say they didn’t ban you, because of course that’s what Mark Zuckerberg’s bot would say.

that did it! I was hoping I wouldn’t loose the texts but I deleted each text in the stuck list and then a whole flood of texts came in including some pretty important and sentimental ones.
