Can I install cnijfilter2 for Canon Printer? On the Canon website is only an amd64 and 32bit version.
Short answer seems to be: Canon + ARM = dead loss.
This applies not only to the Librem 5 but also e.g. to the Raspberry Pi.
In general HP works better with any Linux than most makes of printer.
Depending on your needs and your level of expertise,
- You may be able to run an x86 emulator on the Librem 5.
- You may be able to pass the document that needs printing over to an x86 computer on your local network and have it printed automatically there.
I’m not sure as this fits the topic but I have a cannon 4150 printer that I havent been able to get to work on debian, but I got an error “unable to locate canonufr2” so I tried “sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list” to enable non-free printer drivers but here I got a little lost, all the lines already say “non-free” at the end, which is unexpected.
But that aside if it has non-free already enable, why would I be having trouble with installation of the drivers?
You may have to download the Canon UFR II driver for Linux from the Canon web site.
You should clarify whether this is Debian running on ARM or Debian running on x86.
Disclaimer: I don’t own a Canon printer and hence have no practical experience with how easy or difficult it is to get it working.
The loss is yours, this is the best printer I have ever used. I do regret that the software isn’t free though, I did download the driver. It is working now, my problem wasn’t the driver, it was that I somehow missed the x86 and was trying to print from the 64. You’re the best. Thanks
Well, in my case, the hardware was “free”, or close to it (hand-me-down printers). So I’ve ended up with all HP printers, and it is good that they work out-of-the-box with Linux i.e. without having to download dodgy drivers searched for on the web. The quality of the printing is good enough for what I want to do and, as MFP units, I scan much more than I print anyway.
