Data collected on me by ROKU

Background:

  • I’ve been a ROKU customer for years.
  • I have always kept “Limit Ad Tracking” enabled in the settings.
  • Historically, I have had 25 to 40 channels installed at any given time.
  • I subscribed to a paid ROKU channel once (that is, a channel billed via ROKU, not one I subscribed to outside ROKU), but discontinued it several years ago.
  • My most-used channels are Prime Video, MHz Choice, and myTuner, plus a few other ad-supported movie/TV/news channels.

I made a request to ROKU to provide a copy of all my personal data on file, and after about 6 weeks they emailed me a .zip file. Here, in a “nutshell,” is what it contained.

List of .csv files (and my explanation):

  • account information (channel_store,account_language,account_created_date,account_state,payment_method)
  • channel history (channels installed, uninstalled over previous year)
  • customer information (my name, email address, mailing address)
  • customer support contacts (empty)
  • marketing email history (empty)
  • purchase history (empty)
  • your interests (The Juicy Bits… See below!)
  • ad history (a year’s worth of ads that I had presumably been shown)
  • advertising settings (“roku_advertising_identifier,limit_ad_tracking_enabled”)
  • channel launch history (date and channel, for the previous 12 months)
  • installed channels (as of my request date)
  • my feed (empty)
  • search history (empty)
  • viewing history (empty)
  • voice history (empty)

Contents of “your interests” (99.9% of which has no basis in reality for me):

I shudder to think what could have been collected if I had not had “Limit Ad Tracking” enabled.

Of course, Pi-hole tells a different story entirely, revealing all the secret background connections that channels make or attempt, some legitimately needed for delivering content, and others strictly for advertising/tracking/analyzing my behavior, or the apps’ performance.

Once I got a Pihole that plus some HDMI spec issues lead me away from Roku (though it was nice to have the ads be blocked at the time, not sure if it still does the same or if it’s smarter about how the ads are served now).

I do still have a smart box for media so I cant claim I’m fully in the clear, thanks for sharing this!

Wait, what? :eyes:

Yeah, that caught my attention, too. Not sure how they would track for something like that… I can’t imagine they could intercept such a thing from me.

It might be that someone who is somehow associated with you clicked an ad shortly after you did.

Except that I don’t click on any ads. Ever.

Not sure how they would know that anyone is associated with me, either. I’m fairly compartmentalized in all aspects, and don’t connect by ROKU to anything or anyone else. There are the installed apps and services, of course, with their own anti-privacy policies.

And true, “Discussed an ad” might represent a “negative” value, i.e. not collected. Just speculating.

Or it might mean they think I’m likely to do that.

Now here’s one I like!

And how well they know me!

I haven’t seen your whole file, of course, but if its just an empty category then its probably just a metric they use, and what you’re seeing is an output template. Perhaps someone less careful would have more information in their file.

Some ad-supported channels I use don’t ever manage to put an ad on my screen anymore, and others do; it probably depends on whether the ads are originating from the same connection as the content.

I usually end up uninstalling any channel that’s too annoying, or 10 times louder during the ads (which I mute anyway, but sometimes they blast them with no pause of the show or warning that they’re coming).

…their voice activated remote eavesdropping on you. Gawd – I’ve been meaning to get a PiHole.

Lol! Hopefully not. Mine’s old; it doesn’t have voice search. (That doesn’t man it’s not listening, though!)

A 2021 detailed privacy analysis from commonsensemedia.org of streaming devices and streaming apps:
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/research/privacy-of-streaming-apps-and-devices-watching-tv-that-watches-us

Looks like AppleTV (device) and AppleTV (app) are the clear winners.

Note that Amazon’s and Google’s apps and devices only scored reasonably well because the study didn’t count the first party domains as tracking threats. (But we do!)

Nvidia TV sends your data to Facebook!

Roku: not so good, of course. And now they’ve branched out into the doorbell camera business:

I think I may just replace my Roku with an AppleTV.

I would like to look into setting up my own media server/DIY streaming device, but I’m unsure if such could stream commercial subscriptions. (Anybody have input on that?)

EDIT: And it just so happens that AppleTV has a significant Prime Day discount at this moment… So I jumped on it. (It’s a bit ironic to be buying it from Amazon, though.)

Watch less TV?

Look into Kodi addons, I know there are at least some.

Actually, my primary type of usage is bona fide cinema and only the occasional TV series, along with some foreign internet radio. Not your mainstream “TV,” by any means. I haven’t watched broadcast TV in years.

Theoretically, I should even be able to set up a plain old dedicated computer with simple shortcuts to the services I stream, with DRM enabled in the browser, and connect it to my TV. Not as convenient, though.

About the Apple TV, now I’m wondering if it’s really better than the Pi-holed Roku; at least with the Roku I can verify the blocking. With the Apple TV, who knows what’s going on behind the scenes? Maybe I’ll return it… More research needed.

Well, of it’s on the way anyway, try it out and see how you like it. Non reason you can’t pi-hole it too.

Thanks for the tip. Apparently there are Kodi add-ons that can stream commercial/subscription video: https://www.comparitech.com/kodi/watch-kodi-movies-best-addons/

I’ve decided to return the Apple TV, despite the steeply discounted price and good privacy rating (compared to the other choices). I’ve already got the Roku+Pi-hole set up and under control, and there are other ethical issues to consider with Apple in their recent history. (Not that they’re the only bad apples.)

I’ll try and test open-source Kodi soon, and figure out which device to put it on.

Fascinating…and terrifying…look at targeted advertising:
