Default Browser

No I was not connected. In the meantime my screen looks like this

In other words:
Connect to the internet and run the install command again?
Thank you.

Yes. Then it should complete. It needs to fetch the package from Purism’s servers.

Success! Thank you, the original problem still exists and this will make the browser useless.
Missing is in the Preferences/Privacy/Personal Data
The header for cookies.

What can I do?

Run the above to completely remove the program and your profile.
Then run:

Then set up your browser preferences as you like.

You may notice one says “apt-get” and one says “apt”. Either is fine. They’re slightly different but both will work the same in this case.

Here’s an explanation: https://itsfoss.com/apt-vs-apt-get-difference/

@Gavaudan, thanks for pointing out the inconsistencies in this thread. I didn’t even notice it until you mentioned it.

Learned a lot today from you! Thank you all.
Learned to purge an app and reinstall.
In between learned to look for folders connected to the deleted app and learned to trust the forum for giving good advise and except the help given.
What did not happen is that the missing cookie setting stays deleted.
My next question is how to download DuckDuckGo.
My favourite browser now for years.

What browser? :upside_down_face:

I wrote DuckDuckGo🤨

DuckDuckGo it is a Searcher not a Browser
Yes you can use DuckDuckGo on Epiphany Browser.

I stand corrected, thank you.
I know that the browser epiphany channels the search through DuckDuckGo.
I cannot use epiphany because there is a setting missing that cannot be restored it seems.
I am looking for an alternative browser.
Thank you Carlos.

Librewolf might suit you, don’t know if it’s in the repos though. I’d think it oughtta be…

Never heard of it but thank you.

Firefox ESR works well on the L5

LibreWolf is available (compiled) for amd64 only (although two repositories available). And while this is indeed important tip from @Gavaudan, I’d like to ask politely someone to share here with us if perhaps original LibreWolf repo works well and actually installs usable application, or it doesn’t work at all, with the PureOS on top of Librem laptops (here slightly modified original contribution):

distro=$(if echo " bullseye byzantium " | grep -q " $(lsb_release -sc) "; then echo $(lsb_release -sc); else echo focal; fi)
echo "deb [arch=amd64] http://deb.librewolf.net $distro main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/librewolf.list
sudo wget https://deb.librewolf.net/keyring.gpg -O /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/librewolf.gpg
sudo apt update
sudo apt install librewolf -y

P.S. As explained in my first sentence here, above CLI commands are not intended to be executed on Librem 5, at least not as long as arm64 .deb package not available there (or within repo.pureos directly as arm64.deb). And sorry if bothering here, cannot help any further anyway.

DuckDuckGo apparently does indeed make a browser now. See: https://community.e.foundation/t/app-lounge-data-privacy-from-google/40001 and https://news.itsfoss.com/duckduckgo-desktop-browser/
It’s based on WebKit, and available for Android (including F-Droid) and iOS. It’s not in the PureOS store; there’s probably not a Linux package yet.

LibreWolf is available as a flatpak; I just installed it, but it doesn’t scale properly, and crashes every time I attempt to access the Preferences menu.

@dav69, can you post a picture to illustrate what’s missing? I saw your early pic, but I can’t figure out what exactly you’re referring to.

P.S. If you’ve been making system backups regularly, and if you have one that predates your mix-up, you can restore it and get your system back to the way it was before.

Hi, Amarok.
It is the Cookie setting missing from that list shown on the pic.
The path is: Preferences/Privacy/Clear Personal/Data
I have a backup made on the day I received the Phone. Did try the restore and that is the reason I have 4 out of the 5 settings. The Cookie is missing.
Thank you.

So this is what it looks like now?

Clearing data (especially cookies) should not corrupt a browser; it’s very common to clear cookies. Is it possible the categories disappeared simply because they’re empty at the moment, and will reappear if/when they start to contain something?

Mine looks like this:

Yes this how it looks like now. And this is the message I get when trying to connect to as an example the forum.

Thank you.

Do you have “Website Data Storage - Allow websites to store cookies…” enabled?
