I would like to see a desktop battery charge for the Librem 5. It would have two slots for the battery pack charging at home. When need to pull the old used battery out and replace a recharge battery in the Phone and on one’s way and then place the charge-able battery in the slot to be charge up. This way one would always have a running phone always in use.
Well, good news: there already exists such a battery charger type that you can already buy. It’s one battery at a time only, but that’s normal - you just need two of them. It’s a “universal” model that fits L5 battery as well. Pretty cheap but works fine. Here’s an example image: External battery charger for Librem5 - #107 by veleno
There are some draw backs on this type of charger. The battery charger for the phone only takes one hour. This charger takes all day or 24 hrs and it only holds one battery. Also, there is a risk of destroying the battery life with this charger…I prefer Purism engineers design one that fits the bill of request and not to improvise to make it work.
I don’t see the need for the charger to charge two batteries at once.
There is a risk. However, given your claim that it takes all day for a charge, that risk is smaller than for a fast charger. The risk is in regard to overcharging … and since they have a rough State-of-Charge monitor, one could charge to what it says is 80% (which is the ideal anyway) and the risk would be tiny (maybe even less than using the phone to charge it). Ideally, of course, it would be nice to have documents on the BMS (Battery Management System) protocol in regard to charging/overcharging.
Motorola radios had chargers for their radio’s. By having a external charger you can rotate the batteries from the radio to the charger with a fresh battery. Then exchange the old battery in charger. There is times you may need two batteries if out in about in the field for long periods of time. Use a attache case to store the extra batteries while in the field or out and about…
I am one of the many electronic communication tech’s that are left that started the idea of a cell phone many years ago. So I have lots of engineering and repairing communication of radio’s and experience. The reason I had brought this idea to you folks because of my experience and hope that purism will bring to you a nice charge that will function with your phone radio’s.
So, You would risk 30 bucks and back-order and not being able to ship just a battery to you from purism over a universal charger that may destroy you battery. Think about that!
Thank you for the documentation. I sent purism a email MSG.
I know about Lion charging and battery management. I would feel better if there was a pdf with specs for the device. However, I think I would trust this thing (and monitoring it myself to only charge it to 75%-80%) vs. the charging management in the Librem 5 itself. Why? Because I’ve seen the issues that people here have posted about their Librem 5 charging and battery issues. Librem 5 battery charge calibration … etc.
