When using Riot app on linux, I get an error when attempting to join an encrypted matrix.org room.

Sorry, your homeserver is too old to participate in this room.
Please contact your homeserver administrator.
The Matrix protocol was just updated, so that matrix.org is running a new version, which is incompatible with old versions. Purism will need to update their backend software. Hopefully won’t be too long.
