So to be clear, if only mobile is enabled you are still able to view websites as well?
tac /etc/resolv.conf
Share output…
No; websites won’t load with just mobile.
I want to thank you all for helping me out; I’m starting to wonder if Purism cut my data due to reaching my SIMple limit and now is causing the aforementioned issue. My subscription payment processed yesterday so maybe this will resolve itself on Monday. I’ll let you know and hope you have a good weekend.
Purism doesn’t cut the data once a usage limit is reached; this occurs automatically by the MNO based on the service plan selected.
I recommend:
- Check your wireless data usage
- If your limit has been reached, contact the wireless support department to make arrangements for data top-off and payment. (There is no method for automatic data top-offs at this time, but this is planned for the future.)
Ahh good to know; thank you JCS. The message I receive back per the instructions is “This information is not available for your account type”. I’m still thinking the issue may resolve itself and will follow up whether or not this proves out.
That’s interesting - the first time I’ve heard of someone receiving that message. Thanks for keeping us posted; this could be added to documentation if this is an observable/repeatable response.
I’ve been getting that message since the first of December, and when I contacted support
, they said that they didn’t know when it would be working again.
There is a bug where the L5 has difficulty handing off network traffic from mobile data to WiFi which may be the cause: Cellular data to wifi handoff
nameserver 17#.##.###.45
nameserver 17#.##.###.44
nameserver fc##x::300
Thank you for the info; however, I changed the priorities to no avail.
Ok so I found out that I indeed surpassed SIMple’s 3 gb data cap which is causing the issue. I hope in Crimson the L5 will switch to WIFI better (when available) thereby eliminating this issue from happening. Thanks again.
Same, also epiphany stopped working the other day.
me too!!! Good work
Thanks WinstonSmith, I had the EXACT same problem, very good work. I think we should find a way to modify the pureOS such that the default if available is to switch to the wifi rather than the data so that when data runs out we don’t have to shut the switch off to the cellular. Any thoughts?
Yes, this would be the preferable route. I’m going to find out where to submit the feedback (even if it’s already been before) and do so when I’m freed up.
I would prefer not to have wifi as default in some instances, nor have it automatically (without warning) change from one to another. This behavior should be user defined and should account also for USB-lan as a possibility for L5.
Well, we will usually have the wifi switch shut off, so if a script is running and it says:
if wifi and cellular available, then* use wifi.
The* system will check if wifi is available, if the hardware kill switch is shut off the script would execute:
wifi unavailable, use cellular.
Something like that, not sure the programming language but you get the idea.
I should clarify my sentiment: I think if you have the priority levels set where wifi is highest (in Advanced Network Configuration) then it should automatically default to wifi when available. This might have been the intent, but if so, it doesn’t work.
That’s complicated though because that is normal IP behaviour. If the client doesn’t make an explicit choice then IP will use whatever is up - and that choice will change automatically without warning. Normally that is a good thing however I respect the fact that power users sometimes want to exercise more fine-grained control - and also that IP may not be aware of what cellular data plan you are on and hence can’t make a more nuanced decision.
NetworkManager does expose a setting for connection.metered
but I didn’t check
a) whether it is being set correctly, or
b) what it influences.
For specialised purposes, you may be able to add static routes to direct traffic for specific destinations to use specific network interfaces.
If it works better, you may be able to keep the switch for the cellular “on” and just turn off mobile data in Settings.
