Using open source to create the alternative:
- Buy Liberty Phone 128 GB storage / 4 GB RAM, so the RAM can max out running speed of device
- Enable the zram using the tutorials on forums here to get even more functional RAM, get even more speed
- Set the GNOME hotkey for “fullscreen app” in Phosh to be CTRL+F11 instead of F11 so that it won’t conflict with anything
- Install Waydroid using the tutorial on these forums, but use GAPPS mode instead
- Change waydroid settings to always have resolution of the container set to the same as the resolution of the Librem 5
- Start up the device, and launch Waydroid
- Use the “Google Play in Waydroid” tutorial to register your device ID
- Open Phosh keyboard, press CTRL+F11 after waydroid starts, then close Phosh keyboard and click back in the fullscreen window
Now you have Librem 5 with smooth fast Android UI and it has Google Play store to use the apps from mainstream society that you’re supposed to use. You can type with AOSP keyboard and after the zram warmup time when it starts its fast and responsive and probably feels faster and more responsive than anything in Phosh. If you don’t like the battery life, buy four batteries and rotate through them during the day. If that’s not good enough for you, then download the open source CAD files and 3D print a Big Battery House.
