Gimp v3.0 release out!
Gnu-Level
It came at such a great time for me.
I’m working on a project and had a 32-layer file and needed the same transformation applied to each.
With Gimp 2 it would have been a pain, but Gimp 3 allowed me to complete that in like 10 seconds.
I’ve used it a lot since launch - there are still some quirky bugs and it has crashed once or twice. But, it’s a HUGE improvement and I’m sure those bugs will be ironed out.
The question is … when will GIMP 3.0 get picked up by distros? Failing that, on what distro+version can you successfully manually upgrade? @spacemanspiffy
(I guess it’s a low risk test. You are unlikely to render your computer unbootable by upgrading to GIMP 3.0 and if it doesn’t work out, it should be readily possible to remove GIMP and then install GIMP 2.0 again.)
Ubuntu seems to be saying that you need Ubuntu 25.04 in order to get GIMP 3.0 out-of-the-box i.e. a month or so away if you install Ubuntu from scratch (not likely!) - and a few more months still if you upgrade Ubuntu from the previous version (24.10).
It seems the 3.0.2 patch version is already out too, so at least some issues are getting quick fixes. Their download page does have a flatpak available for those who want to try already and it can be downloaded from there, or try flatpak install --user https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.gimp.GIMP.flatpakref
(with note:“If available, the official package from your Unix-like distribution is the recommended method of installing GIMP!”)
[Edit to add: it seems flatpak is still 3.0.0 - it may take a day or two to update]
For example Fedora 41 has Gimp 3.0.0 on board.
Thanks, installing yet. I was previously testing RC3 (beta) and I was not so happy about it. The UI is better usable, but the functionality did not improve a lot as far as I can tell in my short test. I would like to share a video what explains it better, but Google broke Invidious again just now.
With “not happy” I’m not saying 3.0 is bad. It’s just below my expectations. So don’t get me wrong, I prefer 3 over 2.
