Hi,
I have an older Librem 13v1 (the first 13" model from year 2016). I want to connect an external monitor which supports 2560 x 1440 (over DVI or DisplayPort). The laptop has only a HDMI 1.4 output, according to the specifications the graphic card should support a maximal resolution of 3840 x 2160 @ 24 Hz. I tried a HDMI to DVI dual link cable but the hightest resolution I get (on Debian - using Wayland) is 1900x1200.
Does someone know if is it possible at all to get higher resolution than FullHD over HDMI connecting an external display?
Thanks for your answer. Yes, that’s indeed what I did: it’s a Intel Core i5-5200U with an integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500. That’s what I meant with “according to the specifications”.
The monitor does support HDMI, but with lower resolution, a higher resolution is only through DisplayPort or DVI possible.
Maybe it’s a juggle between the sender (the Intel integrated GPU) and the receiver (the monitor) to find the highest common resolution, where resolution must always take into account the frame rate.
Monitor specifications say HDMI is 1.4 compatible and support resolutions up to 1920 x 1080. Higher resolutions are only possible via display port or DVI.
I just plugged my L13v1 (running PureOS and latest coreboot) into my Dell U3417W via HDMI and it works without issue at 3440x1440 @50Hz (default) and 2560x1080 @ 60Hz (manually selected via Display Settings)
If pursuing HDMI, make sure to use an appropriate cable, rather than some old HDMI cable that you have lying around. You would want a cable that is HDMI 1.4 or later (to match the laptop).
I don’t think you said what the screen size of the monitor is. Full HD (1920x1080) should be OK up to a certain size.
Thanks . I got a DVI to HDMI cable with dual link whose specifications claim to support the highest monitor resolution. The size of the monitor is 27".
