The stupidity of it… They actually had some idea of what to do technically to have some protections for users, and then to F*** up the implementation. Mind boggling.
… or, to put in in another way: if someone didn’t bungle that roll-out, which could have been turned into more market value (money for company and shareholders) with a little planned marketing and better communication (probably either way, opt-in or opt-out), then someone has calculated that doing it like this is more valuable than the backlash (regardless, that the efort may not work or it may take a long time to be reliably useful - or that it could be turned into identifying something else, with more value later). So, not positive, all around
For some reason the Mozilla Firefox Orbit (privacy preserving AI assistant add-on for browser) contrasts timely how to do deployment right (or at least much better). It’s not that hard.
The use case has been simplified (no need to sign up, not connected to any account), model agnostic etc. and in addition to those features, it’s an opt-in - not just a software switch, which may only partially disable AI features, but a separate install with the normal add-on controls.
And as part of ethical AI development, it’s presented as beta version that is still being improved/fixed based on user feedback, as inclusion is important (in addition to quality control).
