I really would like to by a Purism Laptop, really!
But it sucks that I can not get a (Swiss-)German keyboard.
So this honestly keeps me away from buying a Purism Laptop. So I stick to the eco-friendly way of keeping my old second-hand Lenovo T410
So here my question: Who would help to fund-raise some keyboards? I would definitely chip in a substantial amount if I get the keyboard I want! I opened this thread to get an idea about the potential for this! So this is also a question to the guys from Purism; How much does it cost to produce one alternative layout, if you would decide to do it?
I honestly think the fact that you just have UK/US keyboards keeps many potential Purism backers away!
I would be happy with a decent set of stickers (and a change of layout, keyboard-map) , although i would suspect that the casing is not of their own design, in which case there may already be alternative keyboards to be had at e-bay…perhaps purism are willing to supply the information needed for this… being all open-source minded … one thing that i noticed… their os (pureOs) is systemd based.
I finally will get my Librem 15 in the next days/weeks (it is on the way ) and I’m one of the poor guys who have to deal with a UK layout now (instead of a German one which I ordered over a year ago and which was removed from possible settings in the meanwhile).
I thought about to use some kind of key covers or stickers but I did not really find something up to now. E.g. this
is a full cover for Mac Books so the quality might be ok, but as it is one cover for all keys, I probably have to cut out all the keys I want to cover and I don’t know how this will look like (I assume not very professional ). If there is anyone out there who can suggest single key key covers/sticker so that I will still have an advantage of the backlight --> feel free to share. Of course this is just a interims solution as long as there is no really keyboard available.
Looking at the pricetag of most keyboard out there in general I think an alternative keyboard layout feels like somehting which should be possible. I also think that most interested people in Germany/Switzerland/Austria would also pay some extra bugs for such a non default keyboard (in comparsion to the UK/US Purism currently offers).
Apart from that an e-Ink keyboard would be the most flexible and smartest solution. --> An e-ink keyboard?
Originally I’m also used to Swiss German keyboards. I now have a Librem with US keyboard and all I can say after some use, don’t be scared. I changed the keyboard layout on the operating system and I got used to it very quickly. I think for personal use it shouldn’t be a big issue. Of course if you want to roll Librem out within a company it’s a whole different story.
Of course I also would like to see a wider selection of keyboard layouts for Librems.
