How to update VeraCrypt

I am having problems updating Veracrypt. I have downloaded the packages but when I open them there is always a problem. Is there a better way? Something in terminal?
Thanks for the help!

Explain the problem in more detail.

The kind of detail that might be included:

  • what was the name of the file or files / package or packages that you downloaded?
  • where did you download them from?
  • what error message(s) are you getting?

Given that the essence of any encrypted file system is the ability to keep information confidential, you should pay particular attention to the second item. Just downloading packages from the internet may seriously undermine the intent of an encrypted file system.

Playing your question with a straight bat, the package should come from the official PureOS repo and it will update itself automatically, and there should be no problems. However that only works if the required package is included within the PureOS repo.

(Many people think that the standard LUKS disk encryption functionality is adequate but perhaps Veracrypt has some particular feature that you need and which does not exist in LUKS.)

If you originally downloaded a .deb file from the internet and are now trying to update in the same way then my best guess would be that the updated package has dependencies that cannot and should not be met. If that is the case then the correct course of action is to stop now and not update Veracrypt. Manually trying to fix up dependencies will often end in tears. To investigate that, you would read carefully on the web site from which you are downloading the package what distro and version it is targeting.

I download the updating files from veracrypts website and try to open the x86 file and it will never finish. It always says there is an error.

Pureos doesn’t have veracrypt in the store so I am downloading the Veracrypt update from their official site. There are several so I am trying the x86 file and every time it gets to the end of the updating it says there is an error.

What hardware platform are we talking about? Librem 14 laptop? Librem 5 phone? Librem 11 tablet? Librem Mini? Something else?

What version of PureOS is running on said hardware? amber? byzantium? crimson? Something else?
lsb_release -c if you don’t know.

Which exact file are you downloading? The point is that you must download a .deb file that is targeted at the correct distro and version. Even then that is hard work because I doubt that they mention PureOS.

What error messages are you getting?
