There’s your problem, right there. Collect it and they will come.
Once this kind of data store exists about you (and your fellow residents and probably some non-US residents as well)
a) you lost control of the data permanently, and
b) it is only a matter of time that the data is used in ways that you don’t like.
I know there’s a constant stream of negative news stories about Palantir. Here there is a campaign to boycott one of the supermarket chains because they signed a contract with Palantir. (I have no idea what the purpose of the contract is and unfortunately no legal right to know as it is a contract to conduct lawful activities between two private companies.)
Personally I don’t have a problem with Palantir or any other company. What they are doing is legal, and the government at best doesn’t care and at worst has a conflict of interest. So as long as it remains legal, companies will do what companies do i.e. find ways to make money from it.
The harsh reality IMO is that the genie is not getting back in the bottle. Maybe in the EU, where they care more about privacy, but not in the US and not here.
What would it take to make a difference? Millions of voters suddenly caring about privacy and being prepared to do something about it? And this is the only plausible way of tackling the problem.
Which company was it that said … most companies treat your data like gold (an opportunity to make money) … we treat your data like uranium (dangerous and best avoided)?

I don’t know how you formed this irrationnal picture of the EU
Beginning sept 1 2026, every comapny or self-employed people will have to pay a third party company certified by EU
You will have to send all your invoices (providers, customers) with every details : Who buy what ?
Those certified companies will report every invoice to the centralized EU system called Peppol
For example, if you buy tiles for your floor, your gouvernement and the EU will know how much tiles you bought and which color and how much you paid for it, what ticket you buy yesterday ? what did you eat in what quantity this week ? The EU and the third party will have access instantly to those détails
This is the end of privacy in EU, every company becomes a spying agent for this unelected institution, if you don’t, you will have monetary loss

The EU makes legislations to force everyone into snitching, in short they are starting to criminalize privacy
The EU is looking more and more like the CCP
And this arrives just after they forced voted the 4 times rejected “chat control 1.0” law which authorize the EU to scan every private messages of citizen (the 1.0 version is not the wide spread scanning, but they already have prepared the 2.0 which will)
At least, in the US the possibility exist to elect someone who could do something about it
In EU, there is no election of the governement, the only elected core is here to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to a new legislation from the unelected EU government

i to not like it too. But the “evil” is just a point of view. On both sides some have just the we are the good one perspective.
I see the damage for the evolution future and missed chances. So yes it will be bad. We need to patch this personalised information based change of future.. and fixed a humanity in cooperation with some naural networks for some more biodiversity parallel progressed future.
But this is a mass.
