I'd Like to Replace my SSD with an NVMe

I’ve picked up a 1TB NVMe that I’d like to use to replace the 500G Kingston SSD that is my current 2nd drive. I know there are a number of adapters out there that will do this, but I’m wondering if anybody has any specific adapter recommendations.

thanks!

So, for clarity, your main drive is already NVMe?

Yes, I have a 500GB main. I’ve had a Kinston SATA SSD under the lid since I bought the mini. Rather than use another SATA, I’d like to use this 1TB NVMe.

Could you clarify which SSDs are where and which you want to replace?

Librem Mini has an M.2 2280 socket that supports either SATA or NVMe. It also has a SATA cable that only supports SATA disks (that’s intended for 2.5" disks).

Are you trying to replace a SATA 2.5" disk connected via the cable with an NVMe disk? That won’t work directly, there’s no way to connect an NVMe disk to the SATA cable in a Mini.

If the SSD currently in your M.2 socket is also NVMe, there’s no simple way to use both in a Mini, it only has one PCIe x4 port for an SSD.

However if the existing M.2 SSD is SATA, you could move it to the SATA cable with an appropriate adapter, then use an NVMe SSD in the M.2 socket.

Okay. I have a SATA on the cable. The drive is attached to the lid. That’s why I was wondering if there was some kind of active adapter that I could use.

I’m wondering if I could use this: M2 to U2 adapter.

You can try.

That adapter will not allow you to connect an NVMe drive to the Mini SATA cable. There is no PCIe (NVMe) interface on the SATA cable.
