I’ve installed “Shortwave” on my L5 which appears to be flakey. Plays, then stops, won’t play, have to wrestle with it etc etc. Is this a common experience with this app? Any recommendations about another I could try?
No, try listening to other Internet radio stations. Disconnecting wired headphones will cause the streaming audio to stop, so ensure they are securely inserted into the 3.5mm jack. The Flatpak works just fine on my Librem 5 USA.
I am using this app with Bluetooth and its not the Bluetooth. No headphones. I have BT working perfectly now. And I have tried it with other stations with the same result.
Okay, try listening using the Librem 5’s external speakers instead and see if the issue persists.
Thanks. Will do.
I’ve had shortwave on a librem5 almost a year and its always played fine for me, never skips. I listen to bluegrass stations and it’s always behaved.
For fault isolation, can you install it on a Linux desktop / laptop and see whether the problem persists?
Playing the app with no BT or headphones does the same. It will just stop randomly. Aside from that sometimes the app just won’t start playing. I have to muck around with it, kill it and then it goes, until it stops.
I run qubes so I could install it on a debian qube (pureos is debian based I think) and see.
I only have stations from the ABC, the national broadcaster in Australia. It never occurred me until now that for some weird reason it could be the ABC somehow. I’ll try one of the stations that is in the Shortwave directory and see how that goes.
The stutering show up on Active Mode(monitor on) or Inactive Mode(monitor off)?
Haven’t checked. But this isn’t a stutter which was a problem I had with Bluetooth but that problem is solved. Shortwave effectively has two issues.
- It just won’t play anything when launched. Then again, sometimes it does. Ive got to do a lot of restarting, killing it etc, and then, it will just work.
- It will play, then stop, effectively taking me back to #1 above. There is no stuttering.
Just to finish this thread. I have got shortwave working. I initially uninstalled it via the app store which is where I got it via flathub. Reinstalling it again did not fix it. So I did it again. This seems to have done it. I have been able to stream what I want without a drama now for about 24 hours. So it all looks good.
I’m thinking that maybe I didn’t update before I installed it the first time round but did this time. The main thing is that it works as I want it to. I will now post about another problem that hopefully is also an easy fix.
Thank you to those who replied.
Tip: If you sometimes update your native applications from the terminal (sudo apt update
, sudo apt upgrade
), don’t forget to update your flatpaks, too (flatpak update
).
Or do it all with the update button in the PureOS Software app.
I am using “Good Vibes” right now. I think I installed it with Apt. Works good. You can add any stream you like - much like GPodder.
And because it was bothering me how to add new stations, I did a GoDuckGo search for “Classical Guitar”. This station is a good place to go for all kinds of classical music: https://www.yourclassical.org/playlist/guitar-stream?gad_source=1 I had to look for the stream, but it is in the page: https://guitar.stream.publicradio.org/guitar.aac
If somebody tells me I am not supposed to do this for copyright reasons or something, I am willing to listen.
I have Shortwave
(flatpak) on the L5, but Goodvibes
(“native” Linux Mint) on my other computers, because I want to avoid flatpaks wherever possible.
The disadvantage with Goodvibes
is that you have to go find streams yourself; it can’t search for them.
So here’s a good place to find streams: https://www.radio-browser.info/
On degoogled Android (iodéOS), I use Transistor
from F-droid.
Another tip for adding streams to Goodvibes
: find the stream in Shortwave
or Transistor
, etc., and copy it over to Goodvibes
.
Thank you all for following up. So far I now have Shortwave working flawlessly. I will investigate others as needed.
Thanks for the flatpak update tip. I wasn’t aware of that so thanks.
