Issues with Software app applying upgrades

I’m running beta 8, the Software application has become unresponsive. The Updates tab says there is 1 update to apply. When I click Update All, nothing happens. The update it says is available is OS Updates. If I click the Update button, for OS Updates, nothing happens. So, I decided to apt update; apt upgrade. Everything applied, but update-initramfs complained (the apt upgrade process did exit 0).

This is almost exactly the same set of circumstances which left my bootloader unusable, a few months ago, with puros 7. How can I ensure that my bootloader is still in tact and that a reboot will succeed?

Thanks!
