Just add the phone modem to laptop

If the phone is delayed again or at the worst canceled add the cell modem to make the laptop a “photop”. I use a BT headset almost all the time. With the extra power, voice dialing that really works and more. Please make with a nano-sim

Thats possible ? Adding GSM cellular capability to a laptop ?

If the laptop has cellular antenna(s) in it (preferably in the screen) and it has a free M.2 or miniPCIe slot which designed to take a cellular modem, then it will work. You have to connect the cellular antenna(s) to connectors on the M.2 or miniPCIe card.

Purism would have to redesign their laptops to allow it. I expect that the majority of laptops in future will have this, but it isn’t a common option at this point, except among enterprise-grade laptops (like Thinkpads) and the new Snapdragon laptops.

Wild , 5.5" screen ? BAh 17.3" screen !!

There are definitely laptops available already that have cellular capability. However it doesn’t have to be an internal card. You can in theory just plug in a USB dongle (hence no need for internal layout redesign, no need to worry about antenna etc.). The problem with that is that those USB dongles are generally for data only (although I note that mine can at least send an SMS).

An another problem is that many do not support voice calls. That’s why there are so many modem options which are not suitable for the phone, because they are meant to be use as data only modules in e.g. notebook or some embedded industrial devices. But for enterprise class / business notebooks it pretty common.
But i think an additional m.2 slot which also supports a modem is always a cool feature for a notebook. If no modem is needed it could be used for an additional ssd.

The M.2 slot may be keyed differently if it is intended to hold an SSD as compared with if it is intended to hold a modem card.

I was thinking about the 13" laptop might be the max size I would want to carry. 10" tablet might be better. thanks for all the good info.

Ohh i forgot about the keys.
But as far as i know the b key is common for modems. And B can also support SATA and up to 2x PCIe. So a full support B-key slot can be used pretty versatile. The mein storage slot should remain an M key for 4x PCIe.
So i think there should be 3 m.2 slots on future mainboards a/e key for wifi, m key for primary storage and b key for modem or secondary storage. The last one should be fully equipped with all io interfaces so it could be use as versatile as possible.
