Keyboard and Element desktop

It is many months now that element desktop does not work correctly with the Greek keyboard. Some letters like iota skip the cursor a couple of letters before. Other letters delete. I do not know where to report this. The Greek keyboard works well in all other applications. Element desktop works correctly with English keyboard and with Greek keyboard on laptop. But on L5 it malfunctions.

Have you tried using Fractal? It is my go to on the Librem 5. The element client is super heavy and needs a lot of resources. The only downside to Fractal is that there isn’t any video conferencing abilities. Of course, last time I checked, these weren’t working on the Librem 5 and Element anyway.

Are you using Phosh-OSK-Stub (p-o-s) or Squeekboard? And are you still on Byzantium without backports or another configuration?

Which is better? I was kind of under the impression that Stub merged with Squeekboard?

Is getting on backports a good idea?

It’s not about “better”, but about different. While p-o-s is made for autocomplete and the shortcut row on top, Squeekboard is about customizing. Also you can swipe above Squeekboard and type multiple keys (can be faster with words like “red” or “lol”) while it does not work on p-o-s.

With backports you will get the most up-to-date software that is available on Mobian. But as long as you don’t build it by your own and use the prebuild *.deb files from the other thread, you’re downloading proprietary software since you don’t know if everything is fine or if there is hidden malicious code. The backport also can break stuff that is currently working fine (but also can fix things through the newer software). So it’s on your own risk if you want to give it a try.

I don’t want to answer if it is a good idea. You have to make the decision by your own. I did not use any backport (except one dependency I needed 1,5 years ago), but other people on forums decided to trust and install those files. Some broke their systems a bit, but I guess they also managed to fix it with some help.

I am on byzantium and fully updated and using squeekboard. I have not made any special configuration.

I can not use fractal as it does not support mathematics in TeX notation (last time I checked). This is a unmatched feature of element so far.

How do you get element to even fit on the screen?

you turn the phone sideways and then portrait and the UI adjusts.

See this.

@antonis: First of all, it makes no sense to report this. Squeekboard has newer versions (that do not run on Byzantium by default) and even if there is a bugged version, I’m mostly sure the current one is free of such bugs. You could try out to install a custom layout. For example the official up-to-date version. Copy it into home/.local/share/squeekboard/keyboards/ and try if this fix your issue.

A backport of the newest version would be another possible solution. Maybe someone else also has another idea.

I just had a chance to test the new gr.yaml you suggested. Nothing improves:

iota moves the cursor backwards
omicron produces Delete
eta takes the cursor to the beginning of the line

This behavior happens only on Element desktop. Editors work fine.
All other letters work fine on Element desktop too. It is just iota, omicron and eta and only on Element.
