The power jack in our Librem 14 is inoperable and we need the part number or information about the supplier to find a replacement.
Don’t want to be negative, but I hope they sell it Else, its time for a new motherboard at a cost of about $400 bucks.
My understanding is that the Librem 14 supports power either from DC-IN or from USB-C PD (on the correct port).
So if the OP means that the DC-IN jack is “inoperable” then a temporary solution, cheaper than $400, would be to power via USB-C PD. Seemingly the Purism store can sell you a suitable power adapter for $39.
With care it may even be possible to buy an adapter so that the existing AC-DC adapter can be used but then adapt the barrel connector to USB-C PD.
@irvinewade ah, your right. I forgot about that option! Much better choice than MB replacement, if no direct replacement is available. Good call…
Thank you. We have had charging difficulties over time. We thought it was a problem with the charger tip, always adjusting it to be able to charge, but it turns out that the charging problem was, in fact, the power jack that was unstable. We cannot charge via USB-C because the battery is dead. After this problem, we have contacted Support in January and have not received a response. The laptop is now disassembled, awaiting a new jack. We don’t mind buying a motherboard, but orders are with issues now.
How have you determined that? Do you own the official Purism USB-C power supply for the Librem 14? Do you have a different USB-C power supply that may be compatible? What are its specifications? Product link for it?
Edit Bear in mind also that of the two USB-C ports on the Librem 14, only one of them supports Power Delivery. So if you have a USB-C power supply with the correct voltage and sufficient current (power) at that voltage then you still need to plug the power supply into the correct USB-C port. /Edit
So if the battery is dead that means you also won’t be able to charge via the DC-IN barrel connector either, right? i.e. even if you were able to get that connector fixed?
What about taking the battery out and operating the laptop with power via USB-C?
It seems as if there’s background information that Purism Support may have but we in this forum don’t have. You probably need a Support escalation from @JCS.
This implies that you were going to order a new jack, desolder the faulty one from your MDB and solder the new part back on. If you feel comfortable with doing this (soldering/desoldering on a PCB), then why not just desolder the jack and show it to any electronics retail shop: they would know exactly what you need and sell it to you right then. After all, these MBD jacks are pretty common and very standardized, and there are only a few models for those power supplies that are all ODMs anyway.
Be sure to take the AC/DC PS with you, so you can check on-site that the male/female match perfectly.
We have been trying to find this jack for weeks and have not found it, even after contacting several online providers, both EU and global. We can only effectively obtain the jack given its part number or supplier.
Two of those providers pointed us to very similar jacks, one of which was for Asus laptops, but they are not compatible.
We tried 65W and 90W USB-C chargers, both supporting 20V and several (insufficient) voltages up to 15V, from other suppliers before the battery ran out and they only worked intermittently, actually discharging the battery, and only if the laptop was on when we attempted to start charging.
By “the battery is dead” we mean the battery currently has no charge. It can charge, specifically via DC/IN if the power jack is fixed.
Yes, we need an escalation. Our ticket number is #6625.
OK. My misunderstanding. You can ignore that comment then.
